altenator/valve cover questions...

someone said that the high pitched noise coming from my car could be my altenator...
and my friend told me a trick to single out where noise is coming from. He said to take a broom stick and put it on the altenator while the car is running and put your ear on the end of the stick and listen, and the vibrations from the weird noise will vibrate through the stick.I will then be able to tell if it is the source of the sound.
Also oil is leaking around my valve cover, so im replacing the valve cover gasket this week, will the oil leaking cause a loss of power for me? Ever since i have had my car it has leaked oil but for some reason no one has seen it coming from my valve cover.

As far as the valve cover gasket goes, it may be leaking elsewhere as well, just make sure you seal the gasket properly and don't go he-man style when putting the bolts back on.

While you are bent over the running engine with the broomstick in your ear have your friend run up behind you and using both hands smash your head deown onto the broom stick....once the broomstick enters your cerebral cortex the sound will be amplified and should make it easy to isolate the location. The only drawback to this method is that when the blood flow reaches the alternator it may lubricate the bearing enough that the sound dissapates. So go quick....

dissapates = kickass word, and think you for the reply, i get what your sayin'. Grease the bearing. :8

yeah when you spin a bearing it will matter. Why not just use a large screwdriver?
