almost ...lost an eye!!!
so i decide to take a break from HMT and finish removing the valves and seals on the Y8 head. i grab onto the valve seal and pull up real hard w/ the pliers, and it lets go.......BAM!!!! a thumb in my eyeball. so, i drop to the ground and hold my eye, not even sure if i'm gonna be able to see out of it again... i couldn't believe the pain!!! 3 minutes later... i can see, but it's real blury, (and still is) but i finish the job so i can take the head to work tomorrow and message the ports! GOTTA LOVE AN ADDICTION!!!
so how close have you come to losing a body part over a honda? mike |

Re:almost ...lost an eye!!!
I wont put any part of my body under a car with only a jack supporting it, could you imagine if he had been trying to change his oil instead of a ball joint.

Re:almost ...lost an eye!!!
worst thing that happened 2 me was when i was cutting the metal for my radiator conversion with my dremel and i guess i hit a wrong angle and the cutting disc shattered and a piece shot into my arm. it burnt a little and had minor blood loss but nothing that bad.

Re:almost ...lost an eye!!!
aside from the usual mashings and crushings of fingers, hands, arms, and knees... no. but I did slice my hand open with a box cutter while toying with my computer. even have pictures of the stitches.

Re:almost ...lost an eye!!!
yes pokin urself in teh eye hurts liek hell, but its hilarious when someone else does it! :o
last time I worked on a car I broke a bolt loose and the ratchet came off pushin all of my strength into a corner of metal under the car. It hit a nerve and hurt for like a week. Plus I end up missing a lil bit of skin on my hands every time I work on a car. So many scars from that ----. I have one scar goin all the way up the top of my pinkey from when it got slashed open by a gasket! |
Re:almost ...lost an eye!!!
I work on cars all day long. After about a month of hurting yourself everyday you learn how not to hurt yourself. I get scrapes everyonce in a while but not the gashes and smashed fingers that I used to get. I cut the top of my nuckle off once. I should have gotten stitches but my dad said just put a band-aid on it. It was ok. But now I have this half round scar on it. Weirdest scar I have.

Re:almost ...lost an eye!!!
once i bit my finger while eating a cheeto
|
Re:almost ...lost an eye!!!
worst car repair injury:
porting out my manifold and the dremel jumps out and hits me in the stomach locked on full speed...not much blood loss, but scared the sh#t out of me and major hole in a perfectly good shirt. worst bicycle repair injury: 1. sprocket tooth punching through finger print to bone. 2. punched scredriver into the soft area at the base of the thumb to the muscle. no blood, but i did get to see exactly what my muscle looks like. my co-worked didn't appreciate it when i showed him while he was eating lunch. |
Re:almost ...lost an eye!!!
engine was on cherry picker. chain link broke and sent the motor falling to the floor. That was where my foot was. But the engine was fine. My foot broke its fall. >:(

Re:almost ...lost an eye!!!
worst injury i had was about 3 stiches on my thumb from trying to use a angle grinder on a rear crossmember for a sbc in a 240z for a guy i use to work for, well im left handed and hear my dumbass is trying to grind on it right handed bc it was only ment for right handers, well after about 10mins my arms started getting tired and it caught and jumped and sliced half way through my thumb at the joint, i was glad i even had a thumb after that :-\

Re:almost ...lost an eye!!!
i was puting an exhaust on my hatchback couple of years ago, (my car was lowered), and all I was using to jack the car up was an oem honda jack (bad ------- idea), and yeah as you guessed the ------- car fell on me nearly crushing my scull and my rib cage, the only thing that saved me was two of my buddies were in the garage with me so they were able to jack the car back up and rescue my ass...

and working around hot things, such as a motor, (we all know that sometimes you just have to do this) holy ----, you can grab things alot longer with a pair of mechanics gloves, so i always have a pair of those handy also. -and when working around metal, after you cut it, ---- like that. $30 worth of good gloves and good goggles/safty, its well worth it to me. :-\ even a cheaper pair is always a good thing to have around. |
Re:almost ...lost an eye!!!
I was pulling on a hose or something with some plyers on my Prelude and as I started pulling as hard as I could, the plyers slipped off and nailed me right above the eye. Coulda blinded myself.
Speaking of hurting yourself, is it me or does stuff seem to hurt less while you're working on a car. i.e. gash your hand open; any other time you'd run around screaming like a girl but if you're working on your ride you just smear some grease on it and call it good. :-\ |

Re:almost ...lost an eye!!!
Speaking of safety. Ever use a carbide bit to cut steel. Metal spinters everywhere. Hurts for days. Gloves are good.
For a few weeks I had orange spots all over my hands and arms where the splinters started to rust. Hello tetnis! |
Re:almost ...lost an eye!!!
One time working on my 7 I was pulling the Flywheel. the stock flywheel is 22 pounds, I was under it prying on it to get it loose and couldnt get it so i took a stick and pried up just a little and it broke loose and droped a foot down onto my forehead. I still have a starter teeth scar on my forehead.

Re:almost ...lost an eye!!!
tried to loosen some tranny bolt and some how my upper arm hit the wheels lugs and it took a big chunk off. :-\
tried to loosen some suspenion bolt, i put the breaker bar in between my legs and start lifting it, "bam" it break loose and the bar hit my sac really hard. :-\ :-X using a dremel with a steel cutter, it`s one of those that looks kinda like a gear, i was cutting one of the legs off a dizy at maximium speed (30000rpm.) suddenly it slide off an the cutter hit right at the bottom part of my thumb(the meatty part), it made three really deep groove and bleed a lot. LOL |

Re:almost ...lost an eye!!!
I never really had anything worse than some gashes or deep cuts but yea... you never really notice how much they hurt till you are done and wash your hands!!! I always try to wear gloves when I work but I always take them off or forget to put them on and once I usually get something in my eye after i wash it out I put my googles on, maybe I should get better at putting the saftey equipment on...Matt

Re:almost ...lost an eye!!!
Keeping on the eye injury topic, I was putting a radio in a cavalier when the body style changed back in 95. I had the radio mounting sleeve inside the plastic mounting kit and was bending the tabs to lock it in, it was real tight so I had to put a lot of pressure on it. I kinda bent over with the kit kinda setting on my legs and pulled really hard, the needle nose pliers slipped off and I stabbed myself in the face right on the boney rim of my eye socket, but after the pliers hit the bone, my fist hit my eye. I pulled my hand away and I could not see ----, I thought I stabbed my eye out, lol. I ended up with a little hole and a black eye. That scared the ---- out of me. :-\

Re:almost ...lost an eye!!!
I always put Mechanic gloves on too. I end up takign them off after about 15 minutes with them. They just dont grip things liek skin does for some reason, and they never fit perfectly :-\ I even used latex gloves for a while(they really help getting a oil filter out).
