Re: all 4 wheels come off at once??

well, most people in the scca are a lil off anyway, so who knows. im willing to bet the lugs werent torqued to spec. it doesnt look like it sheared the studs, and if it did it wasnt like he was going at high speeds taking turns, he was only autocrossing

What a tard. :1 He probably just torqued them down WAY too tight and they just reached their ulitmate tensile strength.

I had a friend that did that on his car but luckily he only lost one wheel.

your an idiot........

Hello all,
I was at the event and know the guy who owns the car. (No it wasn't me)
I was in the paddock area next to him changing wheels at the same time as him. I watched him torque all of them. I even borrowed his torque wrench to tighten mine (I always forget something after I get on the road).

He went to a wheel/tire business and asked for spline drive lug nuts for his particular make/model/year car for the Enkeis, and that's what they gave him. He did not purchase the tires or wheels from them, just the lug nuts.

The lug nuts where sheared off the studs. Several members lifted a corner of the car to slide a jack underneath it. With a few more jacks, blocks of wood, etc, they were able to mount the stock wheels and stock lugs nuts (at least 3 per wheel) back on, torque them and drive the car off course. The design of the car, possilbly for aerodynamics, tucks all mechanicals on the underside a little higher than the body line, or lowest part of the brake rotors. Not even the exhaust was really scratched.

I'm not a mechanic, but the mechanics theories there was that the lug nuts where the incorrect size, but they were just small enough to grip the outer edge of the threads (as I mentioned, they torqued to 75-80 ft/lbs without complaint).

Hopefully, the only damage is to the body and brakes.

sorry to say but 80ft lbs would of spun the nuts off then. but they may have been some nice cheap aluminum nuts on steel studs torqued to tight. just cuz u have a T wrench doesnt mean u know how to use it

Re: all 4 wheels come off at once??

It was those homo ass red shoes that did that.... the wheels didnt want any part in the ghayness so they split.

Re: all 4 wheels come off at once??

ROFLMAO...That happened this past weekend at the autocross event at SouthGAMotorSportsPark in Cecil, GA, that's about 20-25 miles from here...My buddy Shawn (Sk8tRex) got there like right after it happened...Said it had the racing stopped for like an hour and the safety tech was runnin' around trippin' wanting to see the guys tech card...APPARENTLY the guy did use the wrong type lugnuts...I don't see how he didn't realize that they weren't goin' on correctly...He said it just FOLDED the bottom of the fenderwells under the car, the car COULD be possibly be considered a total loss...It happened on the guys FIRST run going into the first curve...Wish I coulda been there to see that ----...

Re: all 4 wheels come off at once??

yeah, i was there. it was pretty funny. the safety Stuart really did flip a ---- though, because they check all the cars wheels specifically in the tech inspection. (apparently its happened before) they pretty much just try to yank the wheel off and see if theres any movement. honestly i think it was the dealer who he bought the set of lugs froms fault. seriously, if the threads were off enough you could torque it down (like if it were cross threaded) but it would eat the threads up so much that any side load would shear the threads. regardless, that car was fucked up. like the guys said, most mechanicals are tucked up far enough to be safe, but just the body work is $$$$ especially for a rx7. the only reason its not totaled is because the cars valuable.

IMO whoever is at fault is a ------ idiot, and waisted a good car. i hope it was the dealerships fault, so he can sue and maybe get something for it. If it were the drivers fault, for whatever reason, he needs to be raped in the ass like that car was.
