air compressor and spray gun

Hey guys i am looking into getting an air compressor for air tools, but I also want to paint with it. I wanted to know if anybody knew some good brands and models of compressors and spray guns for painting. I want it to be as small as possible but still able to paint, i plan on painting my car one section at a time not the whole thing at once. I was thinking of Husky or Craftsman, but let me know what you think. Price is an issue but i understand quiality isint cheap.

Thanks.

Any tips on painting are welcome too.

I have a 33 gal craftsman, and its capable of painting stuff but I really wouldn't reccomend it. It sucks for that. You can get a 60 gal husky for like 400. I also got a nice HVLP gun for 100 bucks. Its a knock-off of a sata which is a realy nice gun.

i run the 32 gallon husky compressor, you can paint with it, it came with 2 paint guns, and a set of air tools for 299 dollars.

---- works lovely

DONT BUY CRAFTSMAN I got a craftsman pro 60 gal. and i've already gone through 3 compressor motors since dec. Its rated for everything, but i work it too hard and put holes in the pistons. Husky is made by campbell hausfield. From what i've heard ingersoll rand is a good compressor.

yes and I forgot to say, you want something, with a separate motor and compressor head, they are more expensive though.

well as stated above nothing beats a sata best guns ever IMO but if your on a budget and want a nice gun i would sugest a devilbiss finishline 3 thats one of there economy models still a great gun thow.If you don't have a paint booth try to stick with a HVLP gun this way it will not pick up as much dust off the floor

Re: air compressor and spray gun

and heres a littile advise for a decent paint job you need 4 paint guns 1 primer gun(any gun will do) 1 sealer gun(a desent gun is needed but doesn't have to be as good as paint gun) 1 paint gun(very important) 1 clear gun(just as important) dependin on your primer use a primer gun with a 1.5 tip for light solids and a 1.8 for heavey sealer gun i would use a 1.5 paint and clear gun i would use a 1.3 and remeber you can heaver to be to clean when painting so use a filer system inbetween the compressser and gun

fork 04-20-2005 10:35 PM

Re: air compressor and spray gun

4 guns is probably good advice, but definitely not necessary for pretty good, let alone decent paint job. You can use a 1.5 gun for everything, it will just take longer and you would have to be very carful when cleaning, and clean it well. one other thing that I don't thing was mentioned, invest in a filter/dryer when you are going to paint, they are cheap and will keep water from the compressor from getting into the air line.

Used a 15 Galloon comp, 80 dollar cheap HVLP gun.

1.4 tip i tihnk.

Re: air compressor and spray gun

well you at least need 2 guns because primer residue will not come out of the gun nomatter how many times you clean it. It will allways show in your paint so ya you can do it with 2 guns but i wouldn't

Re: air compressor and spray gun

The small husky compressors suck balls (we had 3 die in two weeks at our bike shop).
I've had the 33 craftsman for well over 2 years, it works great.
The air filters / water separators are super important for painting.
The main thing is that prep work is more important that equipment, take your time, and practice before the real thing. It'll be worth your time...

Re: air compressor and spray gun

thanks for the help guys, another question is if i get a 30 or 33 gallon compressor what hp should it have or what cfms or doesnt it matter too much? What are the warrentys like for the husky and craftsman? I am thinking about doin the two gun thing, if i got a nicer one for paint and a cheaper one for primer would that work? I plan on painting my car black or navy blue with a flat or matte finish, i heard is not as hard to see the blemishes, and i was planning on it neways.

They definately are nice. I used my boss's Sata (Satajet) for over a year at work, got used to spraying with it, then got my own DeVillebiss and the difference in spraying is unbeleivable. Don't get me wrong, I like my DeVillebiss and can get used to the way it spray's, but it seems like the Sata was much easier.

All done w/ my lowly 15 gallon Coleman compressor mated to a gravity fed HVLP gun purchased @ pepboys for 80 bucks. It was painted in my garage made paint booth with painting tarps, box fans, and a semi-wet floor to collect dust. And the paint... the paint was from Murray's discount auto. They sell duplicolor by the gallon. Just called "Universal black".

nice paint job man did you use a single stage paint or a base/clear and theres very little trash that i can see in the paint so did you wetsand and buff?

tranceminister 04-22-2005 06:34 PM

Re: air compressor and spray gun
