Aftermarket shocks

I've got an 88 crx with beat to ---- suspension all around.

I got a good deal on some skunk2 coil over springs and need a replacement shock (I can compress the current shocks by hand basically).

I'm not going to drop this car at all, leaving it as close to stock looking as possible. That being said, can I get away with some GR2's or Tokico blues? Who has used these?

The car is a drag/weekend car running poly bushings in the front crossmember and home made limit straps. I just need something that isn't going to be bouncy as ---- or blow in 2 weeks.

Re: Aftermarket shocks

you could probably get away with them, but gr2's are a stock replacement, so I don't favor them much. tokico blues however, i don't know about. you can pick up some agx's for pretty cheap nowadays and they are warrenteed up to 1.5" i think.

Re: Aftermarket shocks

Ive got Gr2's on my Crx, all four corners dropped on generic aerospeed coilovers, must be dropped 2.5", resting on the tire basically (205/50/15's)

They ride ------- great, not very harsh at all, held up for 2 seasons no problems yet and I beat the ---- out of the car in the turns.

There dirt cheap on ebay to, I think i got all 4 for like $220 shipped

Ive heard blues are better, being as there made for a dropped car, but Ive no problems with the GR2's

Yeha me 2, 88 specific shocks arent cheap so I took a chance on them I thougth for a great price and Im ------- glad I did

Ive rode in some cars with some more aggressive shocks and springs and the ride is god damn horrible.

This setup the car feels awesome and you arent scared to take your girlfriend for a ride, and hopefully get "ridden" in return haha

W0rd. I need new shocks and I saw eGay had (I think) GR2's for like $185 for my EJ8. I have Eibach springs so it's not ridiculusly low, but man I need a smoother ride and REALLY hoping that those springs would make it ride like a Caddy. So you like them? Never even considered the fact that some shocks would be stiff, thanks for bringing that up because man would I be lit if I spent bank on shocks to be bounced around like cut springs. I just want a smooth ride and mine are almost blown from not pre-loading and weight transfer racing.

Ha. My car N/A right now is loud as a dragon and embarrassing to take out so to have my car bounce down the road would top it for me. It'll quite down with the turbo on within a month, but a bouncy ride I couldn't handle. Car is a buzz box. I think the GR2s have a lifetime warranty too. So the ride is notably different from stock?

Re: Aftermarket shocks

My 90 crx is a piece of bouncing ----... The roads around my area are so ------- shitty I cuss the whole way home, no joke. I don't know if it's just blown shocks or shitty shocks or what, I've never touched suspension, but it's hell. I'm afraid to hit bumps at high speeds because the wheels will bounce and lose traction.

Anyway, I was thinking of posting a similar thread. I want to lower my car 1.5-2.5". I'm guessing I'll go for the gr2s unless someone posts something negative. How far can I reliably drop the car and at what height would camber kits be needed? What should I use for springs? Thanks

Re: Aftermarket shocks

I used skunk2 drag springs and a set of the ebay dropzone shocks and it rode sweet. I only had them on for a few months before I sold my car, but it was pretty low with those springs and the shocks took a lot of abuse. It was a nice firm ride for corners and launching but it wasn't too harsh for driving on the streets, and I'm out in the boonies so I drive on some fucked up roads. The dropzones are pretty damn cheap and supposedly have a lifetime warranty. just my experience though. I'm gonna go with the same setup again on the car I have now

Re: Aftermarket shocks

I talk to the people from shox.com. They said to go with the Tokico blues, since they warrent them from blowing for up to a 2" drop (I guess. Thought that was a bit much, but they said just to call them up if they blow). 220 to my door for all four.

Ah, that's a good price. I think I'll do the same. Are those better performing than stock or just a stock replacement? What springs are you going to use?

USS 04-23-2007 04:47 PM

Re: Aftermarket shocks

They're still stock replacments.. but I'm sure they're better than OEM somewhat.

I have skunk2 coilovers I got for mad cheap. I figure if I don't dump the car I won't have to worry. Plus, I can't fit 23" slicks on a slammed car :P

HMTguy 04-23-2007 04:47 PM

Re: Aftermarket shocks

I'm probably going to get some Tokico blues to use with my stock springs. I want to keep my ride height stock and they seem to perform just slightly better than stock shocks.

Jorsher 04-23-2007 05:02 PM

Re: Aftermarket shocks

Well damn.

Whats an affordable, reliable, better than stock but still comfortable shock that's ok to lower 1.5-2" on and what are some cheap/reliable sprints.

HMTguy 04-23-2007 05:30 PM

Re: Aftermarket shocks

Tokico blues, but they're not a huge difference over stock.
