After all the work, I'm getting rid of my turbo

I've put my blood, sweat, and tears into my turbo project for the last.. like 5 or 6 months. It's been nothing but hassle and I was so close to finishing. I discovered all I needed was a oil restrictor, after much testing and hassle. But now I've decided ---- it. I was also waiting to post my 1000th post here on HMT until I got everything good and running.. but i'm saying ---- it. (yes, i've noticed im down to 99x with the thread pruning)

I'm selling my turbo parts, restarting from square one, and am trying to sell my GSR/EG hatch as is, still N/A and keeping my rims.

Problems that made me say ---- it:
- Charge Pipes made it take 2 ppl to put on the bumper
- Ultra Ghetto wastegate linkage
- Madddd JDM sick downpipe that went like 3 different directions before it gets to the rest of the exhaust
- Ghetto as ---- log Manifold
- couldn't get motor to run on any injector map with RX-7 460's
- oil return was probably too long
- missing exhaust manifold studs that just didn't wanna get fixed

on top of that, my car's been having some seriously gay electrical problems.
- guage cluster/heater controls don't light up (everything else works fine)
- clock resets everytime i turn off the car and is very dim
- i can't get ANY radio to work.
- recently my oil pressure and a/f gauge stopped turning on. wtf

car's been nothing but hassle since i got it. plan on selling it and buying a 98-2000 GSR, looking at a black one with black interior. really clean. probably wont be boosting it since it'll be my daily driver for college in fall. if anything, i might swap on my built head and big cams, get some 9.5K redline goin

so, yesterday i took everything out, and threw on the stock header for some angry open-header-ness for a few days till i chill out. but for now, this is what i feel about my old turbo setup.

stay tuned for my for sale thread, and feel free to post porn, i could use it :y

we've all been there, some quit, and some work through the bullshit and end up blowing up the engine.

Just do a nice NA setup and you'll be fine.

it isn't too bad. that's why i said ---- it. i've got big cams that are untuned, so i think i'll just go spend $100 to get the fuel and vtec all tuned, worked out and sexy. i run 14.8 with a fat -40whp between 4400 and 6k

A HMT kit definitely weeds out the weak.

check the fuses in youe engine bay, I forget which one but one of them are blown for sure and thats why your radio doesn't work and clock is dim

i just set up my HMT setup and my clock dash lights and everything else stopped working too sometimes the lock will work occassionally.. do you have any extra gauges on your car? sometimes when you ad a guage it pulls to many volts try an oversized fuse..

if it pissed you off that 2 people were needed to put on your bumper maybe you should just quit

I had this problem, it was the hot wire (a wire to the battery that is always on regardless of whether or not the ignition is on) and there was a fuse on that wire that was blown, replaced it, and then everything worked fine

the engine bay fuses? checked those when i got home from work just now, the big ones looked fine and the other ones were like ECU and heater.. so im pretty sure their fine since both of those work. is it one of those big fuses in the underdash fuse box?

and i don't think the HMT kit weeded me out cuz im weak.. i work 4 days a week, i do not know how to weld NOR do i have one easily accessable to learn how- although i'm very interested in that DIY tig welder and plan on trying it- and for the longest time i couldn't figure out why my vtec didn't work. i tried basically everything except an in-line restrictor to the turbo. also im pretty sure i have leaks in my charge pipes, and the exhaust is pretty restrictive. it also pissed me off that i couldn't fix 2 of the exhaust manifold studs that are stripped out- i was having a bad exhaust leak from those 2 spots

i dont think it was weeding me out, i think the kit was just too ghetto. my next setup is going to be with probably a ssac or cc-fab manifold, external wastegate, and real charge pipes. and i've got a homie willing to trade straight across my CCA FMIC for a fatty Skyline FMIC >:D

money wont help you at all when you just get discuraged and quit on a project because little stupid ---- that would take 20 minnutes to fix isint working.

jinxy 03-27-2006 05:19 AM

Re: After all the work, I'm getting rid of my turbo

and how the ---- cant you get a radio to work? its just 1 12 volt power source. theres one wire thats hto for memory but you dont NEED to hook it up, an illumination light that just shows it resistance so it knows to dim if your dash lights are dim and to dim the face. other than that its a ground and your speakers. not really complicated there, hoss. to get your exaust stud out either get some easy outs or, theres these craftsman plyers with teeth that go in opisate directions on each side . ive used those before and they work pretty good. dash light? you probably just burnt a light out. And who cares about the clock?

well i mean i skipped out on stuff, to try to make what i already had work, and it just wasn't happening.

didn't buy an external wastegate, when all i had to do was save a paycheck or 2. this made me have to build custom linkage for the wastegate, since it wouldn't fit between the turbo and the block. i had the manifold re-welded and tried to get more angle on the turbo flange so i could run the normal wastegate, but my welder is a dumbass and couldn't get that idea in his head. so internal wastegate, meant i had to have the gay wastegate elbow on it, but at least it had the O2 in it i guess.. and it just so ended up, it faced the block. that meant my downpipe off it went basically straight down, towards the front, then back towards the rear again. nice n ghetto since a peice of it was made of TIN.

and i was using my CAI as half of my charge pipes.. so thats a $20 180* and about 2' of 2.5" pipe, i can buy them 4' at a time for $5. that was the cheap way out. i just went too cheap on things, especially for a first turbo kit and not much customization experience on my part.

what im gonna do different, is buy some real charge pipes (a kit), buy a ------- external wastegate, and plan on buying a real manifold, probably just a short tubular

Re: After all the work, I'm getting rid of my turbo

You should sell all this ---- if you dont want to work on your car. Take the money from your turbo set up and go buy a N2O setup, for about $500. Thats preaty easy to set up do a 75 shot. But I still say If you can deal with the setup of the turbo It will pay off!

Are you joking me? If everyone here quit when they got to where you are, HMT wouldn't exist. On my first setup I had to reweld my manifold 3 times, make a ghetto ass downpipe and redo my fuel managment at least 2 different times, and I could never get my tach to work with my MSD BTM. I still didn't give up. I looked at what I need to change and did it. Stop being a ------- ----- and just do it. Jesus christ.

Check your underhood fuses for the clock problem... Same thing happened to me and it pissed me off to no end.
