african scammers are getting smart....

so i am selling a laptop on craigslist...

and i get the following email....

"Hello, do you still have it for sale?please get back to me asap"

sounds somewhat legit, so i send a reply...

"yes, i still have it and its still available. I work on a first come first serve basis so if your interested please email me back right away.

I can meet any time after 4:30 today when I get off work.

Thanks."

so then this reply hits my inbox within 5 mins....

"Hello,
thanks for getting back to me,i am willing to buy this item of yours for my step son who went on a course abroad,i will have love to receive it here in Uptown but i have a very tight schedule at the moment so please i will be paying you $120 for you to help me ship the item to him directly via USPS express mail,i will be paying you with the safest online payment method(PayPal)because i wont be available for cash transaction so please kindly get back to me with your paypal account email so that i can make the payment asap.Hope to read from you soon.thanks

regards,"

and no, whomever is typing the email did not put a name after "regards,"....

this person actually has someone decent grammer and sentence structure and doesnt really come off as the african scammer. Consider this, the person actually names a suburb of the city I live, which is not on any maps. Uptown is just a local slang term to describe a certain area in the city.

so i reply back....

"hello,

I am willing to ship to your step son, however, the way your asking things to be done sure sound like a scam sales pitch that I have gotten a number of times on craigslist.

I understand that your on a tight schedule, however, I will only do a cash transaction and then I would be more than happy to ship it for you. I work near uptown and can meet during lunch or after work.

Please reply back.

Thanks"

so, what is your guys thoughts?

scammer or no?

It actually sounds just like a foreign person missing only the finer points of the language.

I don't think I have ever heard of a place refered to as "uptown" [/sarcasm]

I would say a scammer for sure. Paypal is only safe if you can track the package to where it is going to prove delivery. So in the US only really.

Re: african scammers are getting smart....

i dont know. this doesnt sound like a scam at all. hes willing to pay you more for shipping, and hes going to pay you with paypal.

scammers don't really like to use paypal.

jo_gobel 06-02-2008 11:47 AM

Re: african scammers are getting smart....

she just replied....

"Hello Jo,
thanks for the mail, like i told you,i live in Uptown, and if i want scam you i wont tell you i am in Uptown, my schedule is very tight and i have been commuting withing Uptown and Cupertino,CA. for a business transaction and that was why i chose to pay you with PayPal so please get back to me if you will be accepting that so that i can make the payment as soon as possible.Hope to read from you soon.

regards,

Becky"

and my reply back to here is....

"Becky,

Thanks for getting back to me. As you probably know, there is a bigtime scam going around that involves paypal and shipping overseas, so I am sorry I had to gauge your true intentions as I am just trying to look out for myself and not get scammed.

If you can tell me where I would be shipping to I will verify that the additional $120 will cover shipping to the destination.

Please get back to me and I will provide you with my paypal info at that time."

Cray - uptown is just a nickname given to the area over by Lake Calhoun

as for me, i am kind of on the ropes on this one, but i am leaning towards "not a scammer"

jo_gobel 06-02-2008 12:01 PM

Re: african scammers are getting smart....

Well, this pretty much just sealed the deal...

"Thank you,
Here is the Address below,i have also registered it with PayPal about six months ago and please get back to me asap so that i can send you the payment as soon as possible.

Re: african scammers are getting smart....

Go along with it and I bet you get a fake paypal email.

They aren't getting smarter. You can still notice minor flaws with their speaking. Normal people don't say "kindly" and ----. I've seen similar crap forever.

BTW, uptown isn't uncommon.

jo_gobel 06-02-2008 12:25 PM

Re: african scammers are getting smart....

i just sent "Becky" another email to have her give me her paypal ID so I can send the money request.

I havent heard anything back yet.

we shall see.

That is why I used sarcasm. Uptown is a very common term. I am from the Cities so I know the same "uptown" you are referring to, but thousands of othr cities in the US have this same thing.

Kinda like.

Lower east side
west side
east side
downtown
uptown

they are all non-descript names for regions within a city.

Re: african scammers are getting smart....

not saying your not right Cray as I am sure there are someplaces called "uptown".....

but in all the states I have lived in, not one sigle city/location/suburb was called Uptown, that i can remember, except here in Minnesota...

not in Indianapolis
not in Honolulu
not in San Jose
not in Santa Clara

Jorsher 06-02-2008 01:00 PM

Re: african scammers are getting smart....

Regardless of the whole uptown thing, it's an obvious scam.

Re: african scammers are getting smart....

take a ----....put it in a zip lock.....ship it to that address

dont forget....zip lock bags keep the moisture out and the freshness of the turd in

Re: african scammers are getting smart....

When you get the payment from her just send an empty box to the address listed as the official address. That way you have a slip saying you shipped it, I don't think Paypal guarentees that things arrive "as described".

"she" wants your paypal addy so "she" can get your money... its very simple you send her your paypal addy in which she send you a fake payment on a fake paypal page where you sign in and bam they have your paypal addy and password and then they will get into your account empty it and shut it down .. if your broke you have nothing to worry about ;D

The 'scam' I usually get is the fake paypal email, no webpage, or link trying to steal my info, just an email that 'appears' to be from paypal saying I recieved money and here's the address to send stuff to basically.

I as always, check my account, and see it still says $0.

Another common fake email that they'll send says something to the effect that the payment has been received, but wouldn't be forwarded to you until you provide shipping information.

Selling electronics on ebay, half the ---- I listed had to be relisted. I later added a big, red, bold message stating they are wasting their time and to move onto another auction because I will report it and get their accounts locked. Cut down drastically on the fakes but I still had one every now and then or the "my [insert family member] bid on this and I don't want it" message.

I have never understood why anyone would logicaly think that a scammer would actually operate with real money. You're really white, you never do shishty ---- with real money. You do it with nothing to lose.

There is never any real money sent anywhere except when YOU ship ---- out.

Re: african scammers are getting smart....

obvious scam from the get go. why pay people extra to ship something overseas when they obviously have money so they could just wire their "son" money and buy it from wherever they are at regardless of price there. plus they probably provide the kid spending money cause they are more than likely no working when abroad. or the kid should already have a laptop. They have all this disposable money to spend on shipping but want to buy used stuff. it's really lame.

ask becky to send pics of her naked to prove that it's real interest.

I'm in the process of selling some stuff on craigslist and I get an email from some guy. Same old story hes away on some contract business, he has a shipping company blah blah blah. He leaves a number(I havent called) and tells me to call with the total price. I sent him an email back telling him what I wanted and told him its ready to ship. So he emails me back and gives me the whole I'll send you a check with the shipping costs(that hes paying for) added and I'm supposed to cash the check asap and send the difference to his "shipper".

Now I'm not going to give this guy any of my information but I really want a counterfiet check, money order or whatever he sends to frame and hang on my wall. Any ideas how to go about this?
