65 chevy II nova. stalls in drive & reverse. blows fire out the carb too...
hey guys while i'm out in the 100deg heat trying to get my wife's fairlane working right take a look at my other car.
65 chevy II
194ci inline 6
completely stock everything is og except for the fuel pump. when i got it there was a block off plate and an electric pump on it. i've replaced it with a mech pump from vatozone.
ALL IGNITION ---- is good. already checked it all.
the carb has a fresh rebuild.
what it does:
starts up runs ok as soon as i drop it in gear it dies. if i hold the gas pedal down while i shift i can drive it, but as soon as my foot is off the gas it dies.
also
if i hit the gas hard it either stalls out or shoots flames through the carb.
what should i be looking at?

accelerator pump isn't working properly, timing is off, too rich, too much fuel being consumed on throttle mashing.
take your pick, it can be any of those. up the idle for a temp fix to the stalling

quick answers and they are all what i thought
it's a vac advance, i checked timing and it was good, but i'm not 100% sure i checked it right. i've never worked with a vac advance dizzy
too rich: ding ding ding. there is some black smoke when i hold it above 2000 rpms.
how exactly do you adjust the idle mixture. my "friend" set it and he thinks he knows what he's doing.
tom if you read this i'm not talking about you.
i was thinking that the timing is off and that the carb needs to be adjusted. i'm glad others thought the same thing.
oh btw i got the fairlane fixed, thanks to all that helped.

Its firing too early, (intake valve is still open when spark/combustion is occuring) aka too much advance. Take some timing out of it and see what happens.
