Never owned a dsm but I can imagine that a lot of the unreliability hype may have to do with who owned the car in its early life for the first 60k or so miles. Back in the day, when I was 18 years old around the good ole 1995-1998 era, I would see many a dsm take a beating from their spoiled and non-mechanicly inclined owners.

In the mid to late 90s, I saw mostly girls and rich kids that drove dsms. Grant it, there were some real gearheads that did the ---- right, in my neck of the woods, they were few and far between at that time.

There are likely a few unmolested gems still out there, but they are rare. I doubt many 4g63s recieved the deserved maintenence when in their prime.
