Is a 4 point cage worth it?....

Well I'm doing a custom interior and that is going to include racing seats w/ a 4 point harness....well I was planning on attaching them to the strut bar, but ppl don't seem to think that it would be too good of an idea, seeing that the strut bar will just snap like a little bitch...which im sure it will...

This is a daily driver that is just a turbo zc... not aiming for sub 12 sec slips (yet) it is just that i'd like some added saftey... and i want the seats/belts...

I have access to a mandrel bender that bends roll cages that I can use for free of charge and I'm just wondering what 1.75" dia, .120 wall mild steel tubing will cost me ? (is that even the right ---- i wanna use?) well I'm assuming probably like... 20-25ft of tubing will be used in a 4 point cage...

hopefully it wont add more than 100lbs or so...

which im sure it will probalby add more like 150-200lbs but whatever....

but anyways,

would it even be worth it to put a 4 point cage in or should i do a 6 point cage?

i'd like something that I can still get out of my car without much hassle and that ---- so yea

opinions please

Im planning for mid 12s. I will be running a Momo Start racing seat, custom fixed mounting brackets, Simpson 5pt harness, and a custom made 4pt rollbar. I would stick with a 4pt roll bar but get a 5pt harness. In a head on collision your body will want to go forward and will do that by slipping down under the harness, the harness will then travel up into your gut causing internal bleeding and all sorts of fun stuff.

I researched this stuff for about a year and learned that you cannot half ass safety no matter what. Any corner you cut could lead to your life. You may say, "well I dont want to spend the extra money on a seat that accepts a 5pt" or something of the sort. Let me ask you, is your life worth that 300 dollar seat?

I agree with teg.u.p., you can't sacrifice safety. Unlike a homemade turbo, a homemade rollcage isn't very smart unless you know what you're doing. Get a pro to fab it up, the bars should be as close to the car as possible. Get a harness bar welded between the main loop. Stick with a 5 or 6 pt. The 4 pt. harnesses are not legal for any racing organization for a good reason (what teg.u.p. said). Good luck.

Re:Is a 4 point cage worth it?....

okay which would be safer:

1991 honda crx si

stock SI seats
stock 3 point seat belts

or...

4 point roll cage
"racing" seats
4 point seat belts attached to the cage

4 point belts offer just the same as the regular belts do right? you have just the same amount of chance of sliding under a 3 point belt as you do a 4 point belt....

this isn't going to be for a "race" car , it is a daily driven street car that i want to be a bit safer than stock especially in a roll over situation.

I would stick with the stock setup. If your getting racing seats, why not just get a 5pt harness and not worry about it?

Ouch, how about your crotch when you crash? I'd hate to have my testicles crushed with that harness between my legs. does anyone have any interesting stories about their friends becoming infertile after that?

Re:Is a 4 point cage worth it?....

well im not going to stay stock. I'm replacing my seats not to mention i'm redoing my door panels and shaving the seat belts off of the door panels..

staying stock isn't an option.

my point is that a 4pt cage + 4 point belts is 10x safer than stock w/ 3 point belts + stock seats w/o a cage.

even though it isn't the "best" it is still better.

right?

using NON stock seatbelts (even if they are stronger) is illegal on the streets, FYI.

Are you 100% sure about that? 100% sure about WI?

Re:Is a 4 point cage worth it?....

100% illegal anywhere in the US.

use a 5 point the sub belt is very very important. and it will only cost you a few extra $. also, if you're putting a roll bar in ther make sure it has a gusseted harness bar.w/ harness loops on it. don't ---- around w/ saftey.

Re:Is a 4 point cage worth it?....

if your daily driving... i wouldn't go with anything less then a schrothe http://www.soloracer.com/rallye4.html

they are installed OEM on some bimmers in euro land... they are designed specificly to prevent submarining with only the 4 point system... and they offer a ratcheting option which can be locked out for auto-x/track events...

they are kinda pricy though... but thats the cost of safety

as for a roll bar... on the street your more likely to be safer WITH OUT the bar... body parts especaly heads have serious issues if they make any contact w/ a bar... foam covering won't do much in the way of protecting a non helmeted noggon

just my .02
mark

Re:Is a 4 point cage worth it?....

with a roll BAR you'll be fine, as long as no bars extend into the driver area of the cockpit of the car you will be ok in an accident. however if the only reason you want a roll bar is for the harnesses, just make/buy yourself a harness bar that attaches to the OEM seat belt bolts. they work fine for what they are. sparco makes them for an astronomical amount of money, but you can always copy their design and make a new one.

Re:Is a 4 point cage worth it?....

Nathan, why did ask advice in the first place if you're not going to take it. Everyone is telling you that a 4pt. harness is just a stupid idea. Whoever makes them should be fined because they're making people feel safe when it's actually more dangerous. Have you ever used a 4 point harness? It's impossible to tighten the upper body straps without lifting the lap strap to your stomach, so the only way is to leave them kind of loose. When you get into an accident, you slam into your upper body straps likely doing internal damage. Your philosophy that anything is more safe than the stock system is not exactly the right way to approach safety. Why don't you just get a racing seat and leave the rest alone.
