drive by wire is teh new hotness. ^-^

BMW started the trend back in 1988 across sea in the 7 series, good old E32. Its benefits consist of weight reduction (there being no more cable running from the throttle bracket to the cabin), no more sticking throttle cables or the chance of one snapping on a weekend cruise, and there is a quicker response just like julio said. the computer can anticipate the signal from the potentiometers in the pedal and give the correct fuel/ timing adjustement quicker than the tps gives information. its like being one car length ahead of the guy your racing, therefore when you put the pedal to the floor, information is sent to the computer quicker via the wire.

I don't care for drive by wire. My view is that it is just one more thing that is computer controlled that can not only cost more to repair/replace but your throttle response is inhibited by the computer. You make a valid point about it being able to respond quicker, BUT in all reality, the mfg's are going to use this feature to eliminate the ability of the driver to stand on the throttle and get immediate response, thus saving wear and tear drivetrain (i.e. they can make it weaker) and taking away from driver input :-\ I dunno, I have driven a few drive by wire cars, I just don't like it.

I too am liking Mazdas new cars. The 3 is a good basic car and the 6 especially the upcoming turbo version is a great car for the cost.Where is the RX7 though? The RX8 is kinda weak.Lets all hope the SUV craze dies a hard and fast death and performance like the early to md 90's comes back.

which cars have you driven?...just curious. if you can ever get in the drivers seat of any of the M cars from BMW, give them a rip. M3 SMG is a factory built race car. period. the cost more to repair part i like cause thats how i make my bank every week, but the second part of your statement i haven't found to be true, at least not with BMW's which is what I deal with at work. Especially the automatics have a triggering point at the bottom of the trottle pedal to trigger the trans to up shift to the most aggressive gear possible without of course damaging the engine :-\, IMO thats incredible response even though it does not tear the drivetrain greatly. although traction control is a completely different power inhibitting subject that i'd rather not get into. :P

I have never driven any d-b-w BMW's. I would imagine the M3 SMG you speak of does have incredible response. I guess it is all just personal preference. It's like ABS, I hate that too. :P
