1990 miata build
 

Hey guys im new to HMT I was directed here off of the Miata.net page. You guys have great info for all us noobs. I recently got a 90 Miata 1.6L, I want to get more power out of it and then found out that the car comes set up with low compression pistons and almost turbo ready. I was looking to get 6-8psi. But was encouraged to bump it up to 12psi.

I have read the noob intro on forced induction, I tried to find other turbo miata’s on the site but I have a hard time with it. If anyone has done a turbo set up on there miata I am extremely interested on your setup/build. Also I had a hard time finding info on how big to go with injectors, im thinking 450cc but is there some kind of formula for it? Some guys take them off of rx7’s but they run a 1.8L engine where I have a 1.6L.

As for the turbo I picked up TOYOTA CT26 im guessing off a Supra. I was told I will need to fabricate a custom exhaust manifold so that it bolts up (good info off the read first section under forced induction/manifolds, thanks). And that it puts out 7psi with that internal waste gate, but on common junk yard turbo section HMT claims about 5psi, dose anyone know where I can find info on possibly changing the waist gate to get into the 12psi range if thats even possable?

you can make a boost controller to get some extra pounds of boost outta the tubo, you just need a good gauge tho.

I dont that small of a turbo would flow good at 12psi. It might u never know but you will have almost instant boost with it. I would say ask a few people you know who boosted their cars or ask a shop about making a manifold. Im not sure the flange off the top of my head for the ct26.

what about the injectors? should i just take them off an rx7?

thats actually a pretty good sized turbo

yeah if you are just looking at it. other wise its a piece of inefficiant ----. ditch that turbo and buy a t3 and make your life a whole lot easier then keep reading the forced induction stickies

t3 ok any Specific kind? im looking at pushing 12 psi out of it i had 2 t3s but they were way too small they looked like i can strap them on a lawn mower and do tractor pulls with it so i traded for the turbo I have now

A ct-26 is capable of pushing 15 psi on a 7M-GTE without any issues. For a 1.6 L or 1.8 L it's going to be sufficient volume considering that they use the CT-26 on a 3.0 L. Unless your rebuilding your motor i see no need for another turbo.

it is unreliable and is akward. there is a reason no one uses those on their setups

Not very many Miata people around here... most DIY Miata guys hang out at Miataturbo.net as mentioned. Register there and start looking through the sticky's in the DIY and Meet&Greet forum. Start a thread in the M&G section when you're ready to start asking questions.

To answer your technical questions, nobody makes a production manifold for the Toyota turbo you have. You'll need a custom mani as well as a custom DP, which will be way more expensive in the end than buying a production mani/DP with a standard T2 flange and getting a used SR20det T25/T28.

...are the 2 big competing companies making Miata turbo kits. They kits are probably out of your budget, but you'll get all the DIY help you need at the forum and the classifieds there are very strong.

In the DIY forum, one of the sticky's is a DIY FAQ, which has a list of all the PNP injectors from all other OEM applications that you can find in a junkyard/ebay/classifieds.

The only things to consider about your 1990 Miata is the age/health of the engine. Have you done a compression/leakdown test? What are the miles? What kind of preventative maint has been done? These are the questions people are going to ask you over there, so include them in your intro thread... be as specific as you can with the current state of the car, your build ideas, what the car will be used for, your budget, your abilities, your timeline, etc...

Also remember the stock clutch will handle about 130-140ftlbs before it slips, so check another $350 for a clutch... and the stock 6" ring gear is time-bomb if you intend to drift or drag... upgrading to the 95+ Miata 7" differential is a plugNplay afternoon for about $500 that will handle 300+whp.

You'll learn everything you need to know to build a successful and budget friendly turbo Miata in a week or two at that other website... good luck.
