1989 Mazda MX-6 GT Turbo - Can it handle 12psi on stock internals?

A buddy of mine just picked one up as a beater for 1000 bucks...Mint condition, needs a clutch, but other than that its clean. IHI-RHB5 turbo, intercooled...Factory set to 7 psi...What would it take to take up the boost to 12 psi?

I've heard of people upgrading and running close to 20 psi on the stock internals.

Just get a zombie chip and walbro, then boost away.
Also might wanna get a bigger turbo cus the stock one
is way too small.

Hybrid your turbo with the larger ihi rhb5. Get abit of power from that without having to bust out the JB weld.

I just so happen to have the hybrid parts laying around from the t-bird ihi ;)

Literally all it would take is a boost controller, but you'll bang off the fuel cut when the ECU reads too much air flow. A chip will take care of that, but it's a rough solution.

i hear they can do a lot stock, something like double the torque? but don't quote me on that.

I don't know all too much about first gen performance but here is a link you could show your friend: http://forums.probetalk.com/showthread.php?t=1701070069

That guide was written for the non-turbo 2.2 liter Probes by someone who has never owned a turbocharged Probe.

And how much would you want for those parts shipped to Canada?

My friend had a '90 Probe GT turbo, same thing basically, he had a 2.5" turboback no cat, zombie ecu, a cone filter, a Spec stage 3 clutch and a boost controller and he was running 16 psi running consistent low 14's (14.3@100 best) on street tires. He was running toluene in it and was ------- around with the timing like a dumbass and pretty much cracked a piston in half..but those motors are torque monsters..with that tiny ass turbo you could roll into second gear and smoke the tires.

Stock fuel cut is either 12 or 15 psi, I forget. There are a couple rednecks locally who put RFLs on stock ones, crank the boost, and drive around every day like real asshats.

It cuts out at roughly 12 psi, depending on actual airflow. Blow-off valves on Probes are a bad idea due to unmetered air ------- up the air/fuel mixture. :8
