100% worth it. the engines are pretty good. nothing like the 323 gtx though.

Re: 1989 mazda 626 turbo
Easy to work on (gf owns a '92 626, the NA version, very straightforward to work on). The engine and trans are stout (NA trans not so stout, but not weak on the NA motor) but parts are slightly rare. This is offset by the parts being $5 when you run across them. The online community for them is strong.
Stock they seem to run the same IHI turbo as the 80s Scoobies. With boost cranked up they are fun but not terribly fast. They usually come with a few options, sunroof, etc, which is part of the reason they aren't super fast but is part of the reason they are kinda cool. The MAF is actually a vane air deal that operates on some wierd 0-9v scaling. I recommend throwing the stock ---- away and running a MS or cheap Honda AEM on it if you run something bigger than the stock turbo. If you want one of the Zombie chips I think I have a copy of it somewhere, and will hook you up for zero down and three easy installments of 1/3rd the cost of shipping. If you just want something quirky, with a little more balls than your 2.5RS, I say do it. |
Re: 1989 mazda 626 turbo
thanks joey. Info I wanted.
Subie is proving to be somewhat a bitch, to say the least. Its built to the max without a $5k swap, or a $2k suspension. I can sell the scubie, pocket a few bucks, still haul the kid and the wife, plus groceries and still have fun with the car. Why not? Do you know any forums? awaiting pictures of the engine http://www.lejeuneyardsales.com/img/...b04537e79f.jpg |

There are a number that I joined when converting the gf's car from auto to manual. Ultimately the forums are of limited use due to how few people build the cars. probetalk, IIRC, was one of them.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_F_engine Manual Trans are beefier than the N/A by quite a bit. The autos suck major dick. Turbo that came on the car from the factory Was an IHI RHB5 VJ11. Similar to the RHB5 VF11 that came on the scuby L-2.2 turbo in the early 90s. The stock ecu will hit an overboost code hittting anymore than 15psi on a maual boost controller. there are quite a few aftermarket parts availabe for this car. LMK if you need any other info. Cars are REALLY fin to drive in town. Torque enough to make 2nd 3rd gear rippers; But, they tend to choke off the stock turbo at like 5k rpm "Probinator chip" - Gets rid of Overboost code http://www.performanceprobe.com/stor...oduct=PRF2TC22 Best Cheap mods are Hard upper and lower IC piping, MBC and VAF adapter/ Cone filter. I had an exhaust shop make me a new DP(before I knew how to weld) and it made 8lbs at 2300 instead of 3k. Even cutting off the exhaust at the flex pipe would probably gain 20hp. |
Re: 1989 mazda 626 turbo
Thanks man. Any good forums for these?

Re: 1989 mazda 626 turbo
probe talk, is the big one, can't remember the other one i was on, when i had my probe. (probe gt turbo same thing as 626gt turbo)
my old turbo probe was fun to rip around in, so i say do it. with little mods you can keep up with evo's and ----, which isn't bad for a 3k lb beast from 1990. lol plus if you have/keep the egr in place it gets pretty good mileage i averaged mid 20's beating on it. on the interstate i would bet 30+ cruising. |
Re: 1989 mazda 626 turbo
Are there any major parts suppliers for these?
|
Re: 1989 mazda 626 turbo
not really, only thing i know for sure, is act, fidanza, intrax springs, kyb, thats the ---- that i had. but there isn't any big companies for turbo stuff.

Re: 1989 mazda 626 turbo
Diy FTW! I wonder what the internals are like on those motors? Forged? Heads flow good? I bet web makes a cam for it.
|
Re: 1989 mazda 626 turbo
the heads are poo, 12 valve i think, and there low comp, alot of people just weld a t3 flnage onto the stock mani. it works i guess.
