186K Mile Turbo A6 slowly falling
Well, I had a great spring break... Just built a custom 2.5" exhaust with dynomax race muffler and there's a nice improvement in power. I've had the turbo on the A6 for one year now and it had 200 compression in each cyl. for the first 10 months and now it has:
120 - 140 - 110? - 180 Ouch! I'm not sure if the readings were off or not, but I question it. If I turn it over a few more times, I can get it to reach about 180 in each cyl except the 3rd one and I believe it's the piston rings that's causing the pain. No smoke and it runs perfect, but I'm going to rebuild it over the summer. Should I build it up for boost using H beam rods and forged pistons? I know H beams are like $300, but what's the total cost I'm looking at here? From the head, the cylinders, the block, bearings, etc.. full rebuild... How much is it going to be? BTW, I'm doing all the labor except the obvious things I can't do (rehoning, etc..) I'm guessing it will be like $1300 or so... hmmm. New motor mounts too, btw. I would like to run about 14 psi on the street. Any suggestions? |

totsal cost of srp pistons, crower rods and je pro seal rings from www.raceeng.com 960 shipped.
well worth it. or if you want i have a set of y7 pistons and rods ill toss you for cost of shipping. they have 19,000 unmolested miles on them. never modified. i need them outta my garage |

1300 is a little low. If your doing a full rebuild you need to look at gaskets, bearings, machine work, oil pump and water pump. I'm think more in the 2000 range if done right.

I see some sweet deals on egay, $650 for eagle rod's with SRP pistons with rings. You'll have to gap your rings for forced incuction or pay $60 extra for them to do it.

650 is kinda a lot ive found cheaper

Re:186K Mile Turbo A6 slowly falling
Well, I was still running turboedit, but I decided to crank up the boost for a while up to 10 psi... I was pretty hard on it for a while, but eased off some as my motor mounts were in pain. Which is another question I should ask:
Sometimes when I come up to a stop using the tranny to slow it down, I feel it surge some, but it doesn't always do it and it doesn't completely feel like the motor mounts... I was wondering if the tranny could do something similiar to this? Btw people, I am pretty happy with that old a6... I got it tested to run 0-60 in 6.2 secs, and run the 1/4 mile in 14.1 with no traction hardly at all... I was pleased knowing that the old a6 could pull 13 sec 1/4 miles passes on 10 psi boost. If somehow I get a large sum of money I'll build up a ZC for high boost but I seriously don't think that's going to happen... I think I'll bring the A6 back to life. again... which is strange.. I don't feel any power loss with the lower compression. |
