16.6 1/4 mile.. vtec not engaging

My buddy took my 95 ex sedan to the strip. all he could pull off in like 15 runs in the 1/4 was a 16.6.... terrible!!!! I have an exhaust and intake and a fairly new exedy clutch. there is no longer any ac or power steering on the car... and similar setups are quicker than mine.... so i'm wondering if my vtec Solenoid is fucked??? is there a way to check? thanks

Ya unplug it and go around the block. It will fell very sluggish after when vtec is suppose to be on and not want to pull anymore.

16.6 sounds right for a SOHC Vtec sedan.

Re:16.6 1/4 mile.. vtec not engaging

Yeah man, there are not a lot of people that know that the elevation of where you live really makes a difference. An Si civic or any car with a swaped B16, runs mid 15's to high 14's but that its!!! Turbo that and 13's you will get. 12's are kind hard to acheive over here but if you go any where else like Cali, 12's no problem!!! El Paso, TX by the way is near the mountains, elevation is high.

Re:16.6 1/4 mile.. vtec not engaging

i live in the high desert....and where i go to the track there is a .48 difference in times from where i race to by the track we have by the beach. low 15's in a crx with a b16 is normal.

ya dude your not ganna get much better. 16.4 is what it does stock! so factor in all the stuff you did the life of the engine wear and tear! how many miles it has on it. 16.6 is about average! its not ganna be much faster!!

ya i always thought mileage didnt really matter but when i tore my 200k d16a6 down the head was so full of carbon it was crazy.

seriously a 1/4 inch on all sides of the ports. and the intake ports were full of oil from the pcv valve. after i cleaned all that crap out the butt dyno registered 20 hp! not really but it was very noticeable.

do you have new air filter, fuel filter, correct timing, correct a/f ratio (no big pumps or injectors), a new cat convertor, new plugs, new wires, etc, etc? all those can kill hp pretty easily.

i love when ppl put a $600 pimped out chrome exhaust system behind a stock 150k mi cat convertor.. that is prob more of a restriction than the old exhaust was.

Re:16.6 1/4 mile.. vtec not engaging

This was done in miland, MI on like a 70-80 degree day. yeah... filter was newer... but the fuel filter... i was meaning to replace that. I have no cat... new plugs and 2.5 inch exhuast well, kinda had to use 2.25 for a few bends. So... i am at the right site to make it faster.... but not for a while.... currently blowing all money on CRX. Thanks for the help and everything.

Re:16.6 1/4 mile.. vtec not engaging

hahahaha!!!!! so i finally disconnected the vtec solenoid (if it is the plug behind the distributor w/ two wires coming out of it, if not, correct me and stop reading) and yeah.... the fucker felt faster... seriously. First thing i noticed is the cel... then i took off ( went around the block till i got to operating temp) and I got more of rubber in second that i have ever before ... no more tiny chirps if i got lucky... but like a nice, long loud as ---- squeals. ----...... Does this mean the solenoid is bad or ????? If it is... then this would explain the 34-39 mpg i usually get even when i rag the ---- out of it, wouldn't it?? Well.... any help would be appreciated... Thanks

Re:16.6 1/4 mile.. vtec not engaging

well, the two plug harness you pulled, is the oil pressure sensor for the sylinoid, well, tahts what i was told. Im in obd0, so i dotn have it hooked up, but the cel was telling you its not plugged in. AMybe your oil rpessure wasnt right when you ran. The actual vtec switch is the single wire coming off of it. THats what turns is off and on. But when you disconnectd the oil sensor, it started coming on i guess, no matter what it was reading.

Re:16.6 1/4 mile.. vtec not engaging

i also unplugged the single wire. the results mimicked the dual wire plug... more power. I just don't know what this means. I appreciate any help. Thanks

Re:16.6 1/4 mile.. vtec not engaging

That's wierd. When I said to unplug it the assumption was to see if it was still slow meaning your vtec solenoid wasn't working. I know for a fact that if your oil is old and dirty that vtec will not engage.

SaltyPistachio 08-10-2003 08:38 PM

Re:16.6 1/4 mile.. vtec not engaging

Too bad that's not a problem... unless the previous owner never changed it and that is how it got clogged... but i change my oil religiously every 3000 miles or sooner. It definitely does not feel slower, but maybe I just can’t feel it.

Re:16.6 1/4 mile.. vtec not engaging

hey its better than a dx,lx,or a cx. yes i know my car is slow but it still looks damn good. whats your point for judging any way? ---- it you might as well say all civics are slow because we all know 4's aren't that fast. but everything can be modified.
