Did the rod hit your turbo?

quadtech 05-23-2005 11:14 PM

Re: 10psi finally kills the mighty Dseries (56k, go grab some dinner)

setup was:

91 D16A6
stock bottom end
ported A6 head
colt cam turbo grind camshaft
Garrett T3 super 60 turbo
38mm tial wastegate
3" exhaust
440 dsm's
2.5" charge pipes
modded starion front mount
turboedit ECU wideband tuned to 10psi
B&M FPR and FP guage.

ive been slowly building a LSVtec for the car, i guess i got no choice but to get that thing put together and get it in the car.

its possible that the rod or the blk chunks hit the turbo, but it didnt show any signs of failure.

Shitty bout the new ventilation on your block. Did it let go around @<6000rpm? or 6k+?
I wonder if its the raw TQ that kills em, or the TQ + high revs that pushes them over the top.

LOL, Well the LS VTEC is ment to be all motor, I heard they dont like boost, unless you build them up with low compression and stronger internals, but low compression defeats the point of having an LS VTEC in the first place.

I am debating this setup as well for next year, ITB's and a 25 shot for an extra kick, but knowing me i'll just run a turbo LS.

another victim to cylinder number 3 ownage.

quadtech 05-24-2005 10:24 AM

Re: 10psi finally kills the mighty Dseries (56k, go grab some dinner)

the LS motor going in will be boosted.

The bottom end of the motor is built with mahle forged pistons and scat rods, honda bearings, arp main studs, golden eagle girdle. The B16A2 head im gonna use is either getting portflow valvetrain or omnipower valve train, GSR cams, AEBS intake and fuel rail and 550 tuner toys injectors

management on it will be a chipped PR4 running turboedit tuned for a 12psi map. Hopefully that shouldnt have any problems.

I cant remember what my timing was set at, i can go back through my notes and check it out.

The block gernaded at about 5500 rpm

^ exactly.

I didnt expect it too last for as long as it did. 9months of abuse and torture on that poor little soldier.

It died with honor.

Now onto bigger, better and proper builds

Nice to see you have a positive attitude about the whole thing. I love the car (Psst..i own 2 4 doors :P )

I like how you had the turbo mounted the other way. most us EF guys have it with the cold side on the driver side but you define the laws of the EF and do it the gangsta way! are you only able to run it that way cause of the manifold you ran? I take it that isnt possible with a Hf mani and an adapter plate.

Good luck!

i ran the like that as it fit the best way with everything else. I had the turbo clocked the other way around and the way the manifold had a kick out in it, it caused me a lot of grief for clearence. The current position fit the best, althought it meant not running any sort of intake.

update:

I got the motor out and found that it blew out through the rear as well

Re: 10psi finally kills the mighty Dseries (56k, go grab some dinner)

ya know out of all the years, I've never seen a B-series gernade like a D.. I mean I have seen rods break in B-series but the blocks are most of the time still fixable. When D-series let go, there is just no prayer the thing will live. ---- the rods blow the girdle in half, launch out the pan, out the front and backsides of the block. I had a ZC throw a rod right through the downpipe onetime. It's usually always #3 or #1

goodluck on your next setup

Gotta love the garden hose return! How long have you been running the garden hose return? My buddy was running it for a while then it got all hard and brittle so we got some heater hose with Im sure will suffer the same fate. lol

LSVTEC will be sweet!
