Why people should use Air Filters w/ Turbos
https://www.homemadeturbo.com/turbo/rock.jpg
Dead T-25 (broke the exhaust wheel right off) I know lots of people using Homemade turbo setups, that dont bother ever putting a air filter on... I just wanted to remind everyone what happens when a small little rock gets sucked up insider their compressor looks like... (at least use a screen mesh like we do) Not to mention all the ---- that gets sucked through your engine... >:( Jeff Frank |
Re:Why people should use Air Filters w/ Turbos
wow that looks exactly like my friends old 16g he had on his eclipse.....but he didnt tighten a nut all the way :o(really dumb if you ask me, but we all make mistakes) and it shot in there and ate up the turbine just like that. luckily his engine wasnt harmed in anyway, shape or form!

thats crazy.

Re:Why people should use Air Filters w/ Turbos
what are the screens you use made of? where can you get them at?
im using a k&n cone and its a bitch to get in there and put it on or remove it with such little space to work with. and it would be a huge waste of money to run a pipe from the turbo on the drivers side to where the stock airbox was on the passenger side just to get cleaner/cooler air. |
Re:Why people should use Air Filters w/ Turbos
You know that screen door repair kit stuff? thats what we use..
You can get it any hardware store.. Jeff |
Re:Why people should use Air Filters w/ Turbos
is that safe, i mean, wouldn't a lot of dust get in there. i know my filter was straight black when i took it off and cleaned it after 4 months of use. i can only imagine what a screen would let through.
im thinking i might get a screen, and put some foam in front of it and another screen on top of that. |
Re:Why people should use Air Filters w/ Turbos
Dan you are entirely right, the screen would only catch large objects from going into the compressor. All the dust dirt and grime still gets sucked right through!
Its definatly not smart, but god everyone I know does it.. heh ::) Jeff |
Re:Why people should use Air Filters w/ Turbos
running my crx NA without a filter made such a huge difference hehe, but you gotta have a filter unless you're just racing it. then you don't need one cause your motor will be fuked in a while anyways :)

Re:Why people should use Air Filters w/ Turbos
when yall race and not use air filters along with your turbo, and say "i dont expect it to last long anyways" , so....how long do you expect it to last?

Re:Why people should use Air Filters w/ Turbos
Hey Abaz.... How do you guys get those little K&N cone filters that have the small 1 3/4 diameter for the inlet.... I tried calling K&N and they started giving me all these wierd mesurments and crap and I tried telling him all I needed was a small cone shape filter with a 1 3/4" diameter flange. I have a TD04 off a WRX the inlet where the filter goes is 1 3/4.... if not I'll just have to mic. it. But where do you guys get your filters from ? Thanks

Re:Why people should use Air Filters w/ Turbos
i've got one that came off of the generic CAI that i ordered off of ebay ;D
|
Re:Why people should use Air Filters w/ Turbos
I think most guys run the normal 3" inlet filters with an adapeter to fit it up to the turbo. also remember the bigger the filter the better. You want as little restriction as possible before the turbo.
|
Re:Why people should use Air Filters w/ Turbos
i heard some use pantyhose instead of screen. i use a generic 3" hole cone filter. works fine.

Re:Why people should use Air Filters w/ Turbos
Dude... I have a sh*t load of after market intake filters but they're all 2.5" and 3" diameter and my turbo inlet is only 1.75" I believe... at the most 2". So how do I make a adapter ? I don't think a muffler shop can take a piece of exhaust tube 1.75" and flange ( make bigger ) the other end to 3" can they ? Any ideas.

Re:Why people should use Air Filters w/ Turbos
Use a motorcycle filter, the foam type. The inlet diameter is fairly small, around the size of the turbo inlet. U should also have no problem fitting it in there, since its so small. A silicon adaptor connecting the filter to the turbo inlet should work.

Re:Why people should use Air Filters w/ Turbos
I used the Panty hose method before I got real intake for my turbo setup. Another thing to keep in mind, hydrolocking or even getting alittle water on the turbo propellers could be the end.
I specially ordered mine from summittracing.com. I went to the k&n site and got the dimension I needed, 3"x10" long. It took two weeks to order but it fits perfectly under my header panel. |
Re:Why people should use Air Filters w/ Turbos
i just got a kn today that has a 1.75 inlet for my td04L, but my inlet od is 2 1/8. the od of the filter inlet is 2 1/8 also. just clamped slicone connector to the flange of the filter and then to the compressor. only $25. i also got one to go on my bov.

Re:Why people should use Air Filters w/ Turbos
I went to an atv shop and got a small K&N one that is perfect. It is a small cone I will post the part # tomorrow.

Re:Why people should use Air Filters w/ Turbos
Johnny, upload those pictures sometime.. one of them included a nice engine shot of how I ran my filter from a motorcycle (banshee K&N)..
Here's a link from my geocities site: http://www.geocities.com/siturborex/completed.htm Good engine shot of a simple bend that goes up with the filter on.. Just put a filter on, it's simple. EDIT:.. and another thing. I cleaned my filter off today and there were like a thousand mosquitos (bugs) all over the thing.. I think my headlight is drawing the bugs toward it, and getting sucked to the filter... good thing I've got it there. |
Re:Why people should use Air Filters w/ Turbos
since the filter hangs so low when you have it on the turbo I was tyhinking of getting some pipe and welding up an intake that goes up by the bov.just an Idea. I am afraid of hydrolock.
