Where's that oily mess coming from? Please no...

A couple days after I got my exhaust on it was raining and I noticed the oil mixed with water puddle under my car. I'm like, no big deal, she always leaks oil. And I checked, nope, not low. Well I drove it a lot last weekend and ripped on it quite a bit, drove it pretty hard. Popped my hood that day to find oil all over the engine bay. There was a big puddle splattered on the underside of my hood as if shot from somewhere. I check dipstick again, this time I am a little low. Now I am smelling it burning in the engine bay. Oil has gotten onto my mani and is now burning off. It's all over the front of the engine bay. Doesn't squirt when I sit under there and rev it, must be doing it under boost or something. Turbo isn't wet, like the front of the block is. And the underside of the mani isn't wet so I don't think it's spraying out of the turbo. I don't freaking know. I looked all over, I cannot figure out where it's coming from, when I do figure it out I am going to smack myself. Here's some pics, let me know what you think.

Go buy a huge can of degreaser and clean it all up first. Then you will find it easily.

Wuh? Oil feed with high oil pressure will spray everywhere.

U use liquid teflon or teflon tape on the threading for the feed?

nonvtec 01-01-2005 09:05 PM

Re:Where's that oily mess coming from? Please no...

I used teflon tape, there is barely any oil going to the turbo since my restrictor is turned almost all the way back...

Underside of turbo isn't wet, it would have to be wet if the return was spraying right?

Do you have an open PCV fitting? Just thinking maybe oil's spitting out onto everything else. I know it doeson my Civic :-\

the return shouldn't sprey... its gravity pulled to the pan, it basically drips out.

oil coming out of the PVC or valve cover breather under boost.

could be spraying down onto the altenator pulley/belt/fan power steering, crank pulley then it will go everywhere as well

gotta think about the fans at speed...BLOWING oil around...I know I had a small leak from the feed...before my current TOO MUCH OIL situation arose to me :-[. but, there was oil on th eback of the block...OMFG where did this oil come from batman? and it turned out it was the feed letting a bit of oil out and a good bit under load...and it was being blown to the block behind the turbo.

Re:Where's that oily mess coming from? Please no...

it doesn't look like it's comming from the engine. do a compression test just to get it outta the way. that seems to be turbo related. is the car letting out alot of smoke through the exhaust? maybe it's the oil feed line or a leaking turbo seal. the deffinately doesn't seem like the motor. otherwise if it was the headgasket, or alot of blowby, it would overheat in no time.

Re:Where's that oily mess coming from? Please no...

Well I can tell you what it's not. I have a breather filter on my PCV valve and it's completely dry, no blow-by :) And my head gasket is good, my overflow tank hasn't changed fluid levels in months. And my turbo is good, because it's a fresh rebuild. There is no smoking, no oil burning per se, except for the oil burning off the mani. Maybe the fan is spraying it everywhere after it drips off the return. I'll have to check that out.

Lol. My last turbo was so shot my BOV was soaking my hood with oil.

It was also coming out of the compressor INLET.

Like someone else said get some degreaser, or brake clean which is always better.

I had this problem once and it was my oil feed. There was a small break in the line and under high pressures it just jizzed all over the engine bay.

I also had oil covering my tranny and block for a while due to a bad valve cover gasket, but that didn't get any oil on the hood or anywhere else.

Wow, yeah I have been working a lot so I haven't gotten a chance to really check yet. I suspect the oil return. Thanks guys.

That oil on the hood is probably from all that oil on the mani and block evaporating and rising up with mowhere else to go.

Re:Where's that oily mess coming from? Please no...

Found it. The oil return gasket between the oil return and turbo ripped when I rebuilt this turbo and I guess it hasn't been sealing very well. ::) It has been letting a volley of oil loose everytime some high pressure goes through it I guess. The charge pipe off the turbo was soaked with oil which explains the oil getting into my engine recently. At least it is a quick fix.
