Where should i run my wastegate dump pipe?

Topic pretty much says it all. I'm thinkig about running a pipe straight down from the wastegate into the top of the downpipe. Would that cause any problems/ unwanted side affects that i should know about?

need to keep good exhaust flow. A good rule of thumb has been to run a second Downpipe for 18 inches and then merge back to the normal exhaust right b4 the cat.

sounds like a good idea to me..i wonder who could make that pipe for me?

if u have the o2 houseing and WG housing any exhaust shop should be able to do that in >1hr.

You'll loose horesepower if you pipe the dump tube into the exhaust. I'd keep it vented to the atmosphere and run it out to the fender.

is this for certain? or just in your opinion, cuz i dont see why it should loose hp, its not restricting any air flow.

as long as u have a 2.5" or larger cat back exhaust and the downpipe tube flows smoothly into the main exhaust it will be fine.

Its not my opinion it is certain by experience. unless you have 3 inch or bigger exhaust it won't be that dramatic. And if you have a cat too than its a definite power loss. Even the one company (I think f-Max) had their kit dynoed with an atmospheric and without and it was like a 30hp difference.

So you mean that an external wastegate set up with atmospheric dump will make more power than an internal wastegated turbo?
That sounds theoretically correct since you would have less exhaust gas volume allowing the gasses passing through the exhaust to exit quicker thus spooling quicker(---- does that make sense?).

the basic idea is that when you dump the wastegate back into the exhuast it creates turbulence at that point, which increases back pressure, which is bad for the efficiency of the turbo. just dump it to atmosphere and forget about it.

If you think its only a theory than get your car dynoed with an open wastegate, than dyno it with the dump tube in your 2.5 exhaust. If you prove me wrong I'll buy you a HMT sticker.

Staight outa Maximum boost....hehehehe ;)

I vote for the merged WG for two reasons:

1- Good luck listening for detonation :P

2- Sounds like ass.

I'd put $50 on a 250hp turbo engine NOT gaining 30hp from changing to an external. And Im a Jew. :P
Maybe on a 450hp car.

yeah it does sound like ass but you can hear detonation clear as day with an open wastegate if you listen to the exhaust comming out of the wastegate. The exhaust will tell you if the engine is detonating

Re:Where should i run my wastegate dump pipe?

hearing detonation is no problem w/ my open dumptube, and I must say, the car get's noticeably faster when the wastegate goes wide open. Hell, it's a free path for extra exhaust to go out of. It's like a second downpipe, zero backpressure. Makes my 2.25 seems like a 3" ;)

Re:Where should i run my wastegate dump pipe?

I have a very keen ear of hearing detonation, and with open wastegate dump its incredibly hard, especially when your boosting 12-14psi. That little fucker goes off it sounds horrible, I think it even says in maxium boost by corky bell "The sound is described as 2 wet lesbian ----- farts merged together"

I also vote for running the WG dump tube back in the downpipe, the farther down you go, the less power it will robb. And I've read fmax's dyno's and I still dont beleive its robbing 30hp, especially on setups like ours. If you have a nice free flowing exhaust and the WG dump tube is way downstream you will be just fine.

::) yeah, jeff's probably right. It does sound like ass, that i will admit. I hope i'm not missing the detonation-- that would suck :P
