what kinda welder do you need?

 

any kind will work for mild steel

 

a tig would probably the most prefered

 

I wouldn't bother using the MIG.

 

Hell I've seen FluxCore Harbor Freight welders used in making a log. You can use anything...

Tig is pretty though

 

tig is the ****, but any will work

i made one with a stick welder, oxyfuel, mig and tig.

stick is ugly but effective, the mig is good if you turn the heat up and the feed down(relative to the materials being welded), oxyfuel and tig are the prettiest IMHO

 

What's your guy's opinion on cheap welders from Harbor Frieght?

I've got a cheap Harbor Freight MIG. It works alright. It's a fluxcore with gas capability. I just need to get an argon bottle to run MIG wire. It gets the job done, but it's not the greatest. There's only 4 heat settings, but wire speed is adjustable at least
