what in your opinion is the best BOV?

hey guys, in the market for a new bov. I'm tired of messsing around with the cheap knock offs and want to get something good. What would you reccomend? Do they all leak vacuum?

If by leak vacuum you mean stay open in vacuum...then yes, since bovs open under vacuum

im mean if you hook up a vacuum pump to the bov and open it, my cheap one wont hold that vacuum for very long

Try to avoid the Greddy Type-Rs bov, it had a tendency to dry rot the seal around the valve after a few months.

I've got a couple years and 20,000 miles on my Type-s knock off, still works just fine. $35 well spent.

True... One word of the wise, dont put a 4G63T in a Eg hatch. Bad idea. Reliablity goes right out the window. after 2 heads, a cracked Dp, a rebuilt trans and a handful of smaller items it seemed like the only part they didn't fail me was the crushed 1G Bov.

So get one of those. ;D

Re: what in your opinion is the best BOV?

I have the new version SSq on my turbo civic and SRT4. It;s the same valve just looks alittle different and they got rid of the adjuster screw cause it was cause problems. The reason why they changed it and i called HKS directly on this and their quote " We change the body only because of all the knock off's going around we want our customers to know whats real and not some other company ruining our name with a cheap knock off version. " The new V2 SSQ sounds the same and works the same. I think they made the internals a hair bigger for better flow but basicly it's the same thing as the older ones just looks different on the outside alittle. All the old adapters and inserts still work with the new one. I recommend the HKS over the tail only cause the HKS is a pull style BOV which will never leak under boost where the tail is a plunger style and i've had my fair share of plunger styles pop open and leak on my other cars running over 15 plus PSI of boost. Plus i love the sound of the HKS's. The old school Greddy type-S is the only other better sounding BOV i think. But the new RS sounds like crap and is junk. IT lasted all but three months on my SRT4 and thats when i tossed it into the trash and bought the HKS SSQ V2

That hole helps the diaphragm open faster and if you just have it seeing no pressure, then there is no extra force on the diaphragm making it want to open under high boost.

Its what im doing to mine.

Re: what in your opinion is the best BOV?

ok i got flamed for saying this last time but the cheap knock offs do work and sound just like the counter parts their designed were ripped off from. BUT i've installed these on cars main;y from ss auto chrome and they leaked. I bought a knock off Type-S for my srt4 sounded the same but it leaked constantly and over 15 PSI of boost the thing would pop open as if i left off the gas but i was steady WOT and it didn't matter how i adjusted the spring. Same goes for their knock off SSQ on my buddies turbo B20 it leaked also. I bought a real SSQ for my turbo civic and a real Type-S for my SRT4 and have had no problem out of them at all. The real Type-S are really hard to find now cause they discountinued them for the new type-rs but stay away from those cause their having problems with them nd their diaphrams going up.but if you going cheap do the DSM BOV mod listed above. I did that with my very first turbo project 8 years ago and that thing never failed on me. Thats your best bet or just shell out the extra $100 and buy the real things. Atleast if it goes up you can have it replaced under their warranty. Don't think SS auto chrome will do that.

Re: what in your opinion is the best BOV?

Honestly for you guys running a VTA/speed density system, it's really not going to matter a whole lot if there is a very slight leak. Either way what you see at the manifold is what your basing your fuel/timing off of, so it's not like you have to deal with leaner values on maf systems. I've used alot of different bov's, so here's my take on the ones I've used.

1. 1st gen DSM - great piece for the money, cheap and does the job. Def. not fancy and unless you do the mod don't expect it to hold over 18psi without leaking (not that too many on this site will hit that number).

2. Evo 9 MR metal diverter valve - just like it's older DSM counterpart, but with larger inlet/outlet ports and no need for adapter plates. Higher spring pressure and can easily hold 25+ psi, downside is smaller boost pressure setups will get some surge from it.

3. Apexi twin chamber - Definitely a baller piece, but does exactly what it has to do and can do it past 30psi. Adjustable spring tension for lower boosted applications, and is a piston style so you don't have to worry about seals and diaphragms tearing. Very pricey though.

4. HKS SSQV (real one) - Also another good one, but a bit on the pricey side. High spring pressure can cause some surging along with having to pull the piston against boost pressure. The real one I had never leaked.

5. SSQV knock-off - Lower spring pressure so it didn't surge as bad as the real piece. Lower price too, but it did leak a bit and the vacuum port like to fall out so I had to jb-weld it back in. You get what you pay for I guess. :P

6. Greddy Type-RS - Another real deal one, high spring pressure again, but you can at least take it apart and remove one of the two springs inside to lower pressure. Mine didn't leak for 4 months, then the seal started to dry out. Leaked pretty bad after that. Also the replacement diaphragms are really expensive.

7. Type-S knock-off - Worked ok but leaked like a sieve. Anything over 12psi on mine liked to push the valve open. Made a god awful squeaking noise too. Junked it after that.

8. Turbo XS RFL/Type-H34 - Good valves, but have a tendency to stick if they get dirty. The knock-off ones tend to have alot of issues with them, so I wouldn't even bother if you really want an RFL. Just put a light coating of lithium grease on there and they're fine. Piston style that doesn't leak at the seal, but will leak out vacuum at the piston. Usually it works to your advantage to let it slowly leak, especially on maf equipped cars like my Evo, because I can tailor the maf scaling to reduce stumbling issues normally associated with those setups. Only real thing I hate about this valve is how you adjust spring pressure...you have to take it apart and add shims inside the piston. Too many shims and you surge, too few shims and you pop open too early. For you guys running below 20psi I don't think you'll have any issues with that though. I sit at 23psi right now, so it's a pita to set the pressure just right. Uber ------' loud too if you're into that.
