I know this is a newbie question for you turbo geru guys.. sorry. I tried searching a lil bit and came out with a few shaftplay post's but nothing that actually said what it was..

So if anyone could help me I would be appreciative. And sorry if this has been covered.

 

if you grab the compressor wheel on a turbo (engine off, and cold) and move the wheel (which is on the shaft) side to side and in/out if it moves this is called "play" if it moves too much this is excessive play and means your turbo is worn

 

i play with my shaft every day...

Yes, as boost pixie said, either of one is bad. But mainly in and out shaft play is the worst.
