what is shaft play?

I heard of the term "shaft play" on ebay and on this site. But what is it?

Re:what is shaft play?

when you stick your finger inside the air inlet of the turbo and move the turbine with your finger, the amout of play in the shaft is called shaft play.
so if you can move it up and down or in and out, thats shaft play and too much can be a problem and it can also be used to tell what kind of shape the turbo is in.
