what if you don't use!!

what if you don't use a blow off valve. Not that i was thinking of doing that. just wanna know.

your turbo won't last very long ;)

what happens!!

Re:what if you don't use!!

here ya go........ "An Explanation of Compressor Surge:

The turbine in a turbocharger in its ideal mode is spinning at a very high rate and therefore generating lots of pressurized air that is fed into the OPEN (wide open throttle) intake manifold which translates into more power, but what happens when you take your foot off the gas when shifting between gears? The turbine in the turbo is still spinning at a high rate but now you've taken your foot off the gas and the intake manifold is CLOSED. Now the turbine spinning at a high rate and is trying to push out all this compressed air but since the manifold is closed, that compressed air has nowhere to go. What happens next is that the turbine slows down because of this pressure build-up between the compressor and the intake manifold. Since the pressurized air can't go forward into the engine it heads the wrong way back towards the turbo where it slows the turbine down (compressor surge). After you shift gears and you step on the gas again you want to have the turbine spinning fast so that its producing boost but since you took your foot off the gas and caused compressor surge, it slowed down, so you have to wait for the turbine to "spool up" (spin fast) again. This delay waiting for turbines to spool up is what causes some of the performance degradation that were trying to avoid."

You dont need one, lots of factory cars dont use them, and only if your running incredibly high pressures will it ever hurt the turbo. The noise it makes without one "compressor surge" is more of an annoience than anything.

yeah, but what about what it said in that paragraph about it slowing the turbine down and then having to wait for it to spool back up completely?

Sooner or later the thrust bearing will fail, but who knows how long it will last. My best friends has a BUICK GN that runs 18-30psi and he has never had a BOV ( even from the factory ), but his car is an automatic so that changes things a little.

I was just about to say the same thing!! my neighbor has a buick grand national turbo and those dont come with blow off valves! its automatic also but it still needs a bov right?? then why do they come stock like that?? ???

Re:what if you don't use!!

Well, to explain why Buick Grand Nationals don't have BOVs is because with an automatic, you don't have to let off the gas to shift, so the air doesn't build up until you actually let off the gas pedal. My friend with a GN told me that he just lets off the gas a little slower when boosting so he doesn't build up pressure behind the throttle plate.

eclipse automatics have a bov ;D

but eclipses redirect blow off back into the intake so compressor surge isn't a problem.

think about what you just wrote

A bov is like having a water cooled turbo. Is it a 100% have to have kinda thing ?? No, but it will make the turbo last longer..

Just think, a lot of people pay $150 for a turbo, then $200+ for named brand BOVs !!!

They could save there $200+ and just buy another "spare" turbo, a turbo that's in desent shape isn't going to die in 15K miles from compressor surge and will most likely never die ( from compressor surge )as long as you never just dump your foot off the gas.

BOV cause more people to loose power ( b/c most factory ones leak after 10secs on driving ), then turbos that they save.

But they sound kinda neat, so why not just run one, right ?

How can you not drop your foot off the gas, what if you have to stop all of a sudden. You always have to abruptly take your foot off the gas. Why not just play it safe and get a cheap 1g or 2g stock DSM BOV?

I was thinking the same thing...::)

I like the idea of saving my turbo from ANY possible problems I can. It might not matter much if your running a $25 junkyard turbo, but if you're running a $600+ hybrid with polished housings and ----, you might want the extra piece of mind. :-\

blowoff/bypass valves are $6-10 at the junkyards. If you want to go cheaper, do the radiator cap deal from the other post!

I have a BOV not saying don't get one, but just saying its not like charge piping ( you don't HAVE TO HAVE ONE ).

As you could imagine the buick regal guys don't do a lot of auto-Xing, and most are pretty good with "left foot braking" b/c they do it all the time launching the car.

Wow, never thought of the radiator cap... ummm....

And you guys are right junkyard BOVs are cheap, they ALL fit into most tool boxes...
