what is an hy-35 capable of?

Im looking into purchasing a holset hy-35 off an 01 auto cummins diesel with a 9cm turbine housing to use on my built b16. My question is how much power is this thing capable of. Im assuming more than I can make but I just wanted to make sure since Im not real familiar with holsets. What kind of spool time am I looking at with this this as well? My motor is 9.0:1 cr with a stock b16 head. Thanks.

Wow, I guess nobody on here knows anything about holsets either.

it's good for about 100hp, you should send it to me for free and buy a gt35r. :)

Thanks man, pretty good info there. It looks like a pretty good match for what Ive got looking at those maps. Should be right in its effinciency range.

about 530hp, and i get full spool of 17psi at 5k on my 2.0. i get 12psi at 4k.

what rpm is this engine going to spin?

heres my engine as it sits maxing out 550cc injectors plotted on the graph i found (the red line) :

heres what i estimate it will look like with 27psi (excuse the kink) :

if you spin enough rpm, it will be sweet, but if not, it might be a bit late spooling on 1.6 litres.

530 bhp???? not wheel correct???

I would assume yes, Compressor maps are one thing, but I have not heard of anybody making near that my with a hy35. I made 420whp at 30psi with mine, but it was a first gen. The second gens got a compressor wheel that was a tiny bit bigger.
The he351's which look almost like a hy35w, but have a even bigger compressor wheel should be capable of around 500whp. I have seen a few hx35 powered cars break the 500 mark though.
And it will be lag monster on a 1.6.

Re: what is an hy-35 capable of?

yes, thats what i meant, crank hp.

bhp is brake horse power which is the full thing in all cases. 530bhp at the crank, or somewhat less bhp at the wheels.

it should really be written XXXwbhp when referring to wheel hp. but abbreviations are just too convenient :-)

if the map i plotted my stuff on is right, then 27 psi will give you the best power from the turbo if your engine is capable of making that hp from that psi.

if you try to make max power for the turbo at a different pressure ratio, the max wont be as high.

at 420wbhp on the ford at 30psi, i reckon you were doing pretty well indeed :-) with a hotter cam and more rpm/more freely flowing heads etc, maybe you would have been able to stretch out to the edge of the map at about 500crank. you cant have been far off it though, you were probably loosing 20 - 80 hp in the box/diff depending on which gear you were in for the run.

still, for the money, its impossible to beat. if my gearbox had decent ratios, i'd be totally happy with it except for the skid factor. i might post a thread about possible solutions for that issue sometime soon if i feel so inclined.

as it stands, when i shift (except into 5th which is just silly) rpms fall to 4500 where i am slightly out of max boost. it only takes a fraction of a second or so to respool, and its away again. with an rx7 gearset, i'd be sitting back on 5k with each shift and life would be rosey. as it stands, its still pulling hard on a shift, just not fully hard. i'm definitely the odd one out with my bolocks gear ratios though. all normal boxs have decentish ratios or better. for the record, shifting into 5th from 4th takes me from 7500 to 6700 rpm. see what i mean by joke :-)

Reading your posts is really difficult, fred. It's like 1/10th tech, 1/4'th sugestion, 7/10ths blabbering about your self like a female.
