What Happened?

??? Last nite on the way to a friends i was cruisin down the highway in 4 gear half throttle gettin on it a lil bit then let off then started cruisin again and when i hit the gas it sounded like it was only runnin on 2 or 3 cylinders. It didnt make no bang or anything like if i were to threw a rod or piston. Soon as i got it here i popped the hood and noticed oil all over the back of the block, car was still runnin with no knocks or nething? Could it be a head gasket or what do u guys think? Im hopin nothin internal cus this is like a new engine, jdm d15b so let me know what u guys think. THANX

Re:What Happened?

by the looks of it it seems like i don't know what the ---- it is. maybe your oil ffed line started leaking and the ecu went into limp mode cause of the sudden drop in oil pressure. any CELS? and do you have a CEL installed in the cluster?

TurboCivicSiR21 10-18-2004 02:25 PM

Re:What Happened?

Actually the CEL did come on but thats cus i dont have a missing link yet and when it gets to a certain rpm CEL comes on from readin all that boost so thats y i left off, turn the switch off then back on. I also noticed today that my vaccum line was off to the fpr but not sure if i knocked off last nite from lookin at stuff. But car starts right up with no knocks or bangs so now that i think about it b4 i pull the head im gonna see if that oil line came off but still the car is only runnin on like 2 or 3 cylinders. ???

Re:What Happened?

aight almost ready to pull the head, pulled all plugs and notice the porecline was broken on one of them, id have the head off now if it was for one the the exaust manifold bolts strippin on me but i see i aint gettin much help here, im just hopin nothin happen to the pistons or rods and thats its just the head gasket. ??? People throw me ur opinions plzzz

robs99si 10-18-2004 03:30 PM

Re:What Happened?

i fthe porcelin is broken on a spark plug good chance is that you're not getting a full spark in that cylinder. my car ran like that after i washed the engine and a spark plug hole in the vlave cover was filled to the top from the plug on up. ran good when i got the water out and started it up again. replace the broken spark plug and then try it. maybe the spark is jumping from the plug to the valve cover on the broken spark plug.

TurboCivicSiR21 10-18-2004 03:49 PM

Re:What Happened?

Yea but remember i said i seen oil on the back of my block, so im hopin its the head gasket. Anyone know a quick site i can go to for the head bolts torque specs and sequence cus im way for away from hope and have no manuals and cant find info online. THANX

Tad 10-18-2004 03:55 PM

Re:What Happened?

if you pull the head you should put a new headgasket on,
or chances are you'll be pulling it again real soon.

but ---- man, stop jumping into things.

how about you check EVERYTHING before you go ripping the head off your new motor.
you hadnt even checked your oil lines before you started planning on pulling the head??

check ALL your lines, hoses, plugs, etc, for anything damaged, unhooked, broken, or just plain loose.
then give everything a visual check.

examine the sparkplug holes, then replace the plugs.

see if it runs better.

if its the same, then yeeah, thats when i'd think about pulling the head. but only then.

TurboCivicSiR21 10-18-2004 04:36 PM

Re:What Happened?

too late i just took it off, pistons are clean as ----, anti freeze is like crystal clear clean like new and i only seen oil in the drivers side rear corner but cant tell if it was the head gasket, can u even tell if there blown or what not but i didnt see anywhere else back there it could have came from.

slowpoke 10-18-2004 04:46 PM

Re:What Happened?

well i hope you ordered a new headgasket , because now that youve taken the head off you cant just put the head back on.

robs99si 10-18-2004 05:15 PM

Re:What Happened?

did you find where the oil was comming from? maybe an oil fitting failed.

Umm do u think im that stupid, ive been doin swaps for a few years now and pulled tons of heads, already had it ordered last nite and bout to put it back on!!

TurboCivicSiR21 10-18-2004 10:40 PM

Re:What Happened?

Well heres the deal, got the head on, flushed the engine, changed the oil and filter, and got new plugs (colder), and well its 11:30 started it up, sounded a lil better but still had that hessitation and its too late to rev it up and try to find out whats up. I wiped the one spot where the oil was comin out on the block to see t/m if its still comin out there but is it possible for the head or block to warp even know the car never got hot??? I had the head at tdc when i took it off and didnt move a think b4 it went back on so i dont think it could be the timing and dont see why id have to adjust the distributer but im gonna try that t/m also. And now that i think about it the cap and wires are stock off and old friends civic so does anyone think it could be either of those two?? Im so pissed cus im in the process of sellin this car and cant and wont sell it like this. PLEASE respond with all ur opinions. THANX

Did you ever check your CEL readout? I know you're infinitely wise in the ways of the (ninja)swap, but you can have more than one code when you get a CEL. :P

Re:What Happened?

the only thing I can think of is your oil feed tap on the back of the block is loose or leaking.

TurboCivicSiR21 10-19-2004 06:54 PM

Re:What Happened?

No oil feed was fine, it was def. comin from under the head but car never overheated and oil and water never mixed so the head shoulda been fine (i hope). Anyhow i just went out and started it back up but dont wanna let it run long cus i dont wanna mess nething up. So while it was running i pulled the wires and noticed that the idling didnt change at all cept for maybe one cylinder and that was a lil bit, and as i reved the white smoke was blowing out the breather on the valve cover. Im bout to go try a cap, rotor and wires and well for the timing that should all be on cus i set it for tdc and nothin got moved when i pulled it so put all back on like it came off so does anyone have any ideas y it could be smoking like that? Could it be the fuel not burning cus not enough spark? But is it fuel or oil smoke thats comin out? Please Help cus im stuck at a friends house in another state til its fixed, lol, and its raining

TurboCivicSiR21 10-19-2004 09:20 PM

Re:What Happened?

Aight im back once again with even more bad new, i think i found the problem but still need some opinions so if ur reading this please help. I got the cap rotor and wires on and car ran a lil bit better but no i noticed and talk to a few other ppl and the say i could have blow by cus there is smoke comin out the dip stick and valve cover and with the car runnin i took all the wires off one at a time and the 2nd cylinder didnt make any diff. but the rest did. This is also the same cylinder that the old spark porceline broke in.

robs99si 10-19-2004 10:37 PM

Re:What Happened?

looks like it's compression testing time. check the compression on all cylinders. there's a good chance that a piston has gone bad.

TurboCivicSiR21 10-19-2004 11:11 PM

Re:What Happened?

Well i already know what cylinder its in and the pistons all looked fine, lile brand new cus they only got like 30k on them, but is there a possibily i coulda cracked or broke one of the rings in that cylinder? And does anyone know a good reasonable place for stoke and aftermarket rings and head gaskets?

rob42386 10-19-2004 11:30 PM

Re:What Happened?

OMG i think im confused ???

Is this motor even turboed? im guessing so since your int he FI section

if your having white smoke problem, you probably messed up your headgasket. It could be a number of things
valve chipped, rings going bad, etc.

Ding! Ding! We have a winner! Your ringlands have probably owned you. Man I don't get it. Why in the hell did you pull the head before even doing a compression check? ??? You said there was oil leaking from your motor and your experiencing blow-by. First things first find the source of the oil leak. After the leak is fixed, check your compression to make sure nothing internally is wrong with your motor. Don't jump to conclusions by pulling the head when you don't even have a clue what is wrong. Please excercise a
little common sense. :o

P.S. I usually just browse this site and never post. But your stupidity brought me out of the shadows. ;)

how do you tell yourself "hey, I'm going to pull the head" without having any idea whether or not your compression is crappy? good pwnage on that one n00b.

ummm for ur info i already knew where the oil was comin from there therefore that was the whole reason of pulling the head cus it was gonna need a head gasket neways

um from past experiences and hearing how the car ran i could tell sumthin was fucked, sound just like my one honda i burnt valves in and was runnin on like 3 cylinders from NOS, only thing diff. here is it was turbo

Re:What Happened?

The only thing im a noob to here is internals cus i never had to mess with pistons or rings so if u could explain what the ringlands are and where there located, if they can be replaced and how much? Its the number 2 cylinder givin me no compression so whatever it is rings, ringlands or w/e im sure they dont sell them seperatly and will just have to buy a whole kit.

The ringsland is basically the "rings" that goes around the pistons. There are three per piston (one oil ring that goes into the bottom groove and two others). You might have broken one or more on cylinder #2. They come in a kit which consist of four sets per kit. If you are running stock honda piston you can just buy a set from a honda dealer. The cost should be less than $100.00. Even though only one piston has low compression, I would suggest you change the rings on all four pistons.

If you decide to go forged piston and rods, you are looking at an average cost of about $760.00 shipped. Some places you can contact are NOPI, Race Engineering, Optionsauto, and eBay.

its possible, save yourself the hassle and just find a shitty d15 and swap it in.

It's possible. The only way to verify this is by taking the cylinder head off and check the walls of each cylinder. The scars, if any, could be minimal. I hope you have GOOD LUCK!!

Why would i wanna just swap some junk d15 with hundreds of miles, i just put this engine in which has bout 30k and hasnt gave me a problem yet. I ran a 14.9 with just i/h/e in my 93 coupe so this motor is stayin.

StanB 10-20-2004 05:16 PM

Re:What Happened?

If there are no scars or if the scars are minimal and can be cured with a cylinder-hone, there is no need to replace the engine.

TurboCivicSiR21 10-20-2004 06:24 PM

Re:What Happened?

Aight just did a compression test and here are the numbers
Cylinder
#1 150
#2 0
#3 150
#4 145

Now remember number 2 cylinder is where the porcelin on the old plug was cracked and has oil on new plugs and didnt make no difference when i pulled the wire while running so could it be rings only or do u think anything could have happened to the piston? Im tryin to fix this ASAP cus the car is suppose to be sold. THANX

Ive been talkin to a friend who thinks the valves could be stuck open in that cylinder, does anyone have an opinion on that?

Pour some oil (about 4 or 5 cork full) through the spark plug hole into cylinder # 2 and then do another compression test. If the reading is higer, it is the rings. If the reading is the same, you have a sticking valve.

TurboCivicSiR21 10-21-2004 02:20 AM

Re:What Happened?

4 or 5 what? and if it is the valves sticking can it be fixed or have to be replaced? could it be a possibly it could be both cus would it smoke out the valve cover and dip stick if it was a sticking valve and how can i tell w/o takin it to a machine shop? I just wanna see if i can find this out b4 i pull the piston but thanx for the info im gonna try that t/m to see if the comp. is diff.

Re:What Happened?

I didn't read all the post.
First thing that came to mind when I read your post is...that you broke a ringland.

TurboCivicSiR21 10-21-2004 10:31 AM

Re:What Happened?

Ive also been told that i should have atleast some compression if it were the rings or is the ringlands totally diff. and show no compression? i just wanna make sure its nothin is wrong with the head b4 i put it back on again.Thanx for the input
