What car can I find a Garrett T3 50 trim turbo on?

I was almost convinced that a Saab (1980-89) had the Garrett T3 50 trim until I did some Googling. It turns out it's got the 40 trim compressor wheel. Now I can't find what car I can get the T3 50 trim from. Any ideas? Thanks

I believe the ones off the Chrysler's are 50 trim, but then again, the only confirmed T3 50 trim I've had was some weird .48/.42 with the compressor inlet just slightly bent outward. It was off some sort of Dodge too. I'd look around and see if maybe the Dodge turbos did. Why not just go to a T3 60 trim? You'd just need a 60 trim compressor wheel and housing. The stock backplate off the 40, 45, or 50 trims works with the 60 trim for some reason. Must have same exducer measurement. I'm sure I could hook you up with the 60 trim ---- you need.

hey 2G6, i have a volvo t3 .42/.48 50 trim. i was wondering if the compressor housing would also fit on the stock back plate of the volvo compressor housing? i know you were referring to dodge's or something but maybe it would work on the volvo as well? im thinking all turbo parts are somewhat interchangeable but let me know

Oh you mean you're wondering if a T3 60 trim compressor wheel and compressor housing will fit onto the .48/.42 you've got? I'm going with a preemptive yes. All the T3 frame stuff is really interchangable. You'll have to have the compressor housing and wheel from the 60 trim though. I'll do a double check and see if the exducer measurements are the same for all T3 compressor wheels, but I've dine it before, more than once, so it's really just a final verification. The 60 trim wheel obviously won't fit into the .42 a/r housing, but it really should fit the backplate from the 50 trim. I have pictures of a 40 trim I converted to a 60 trim without even removing the stock backplate, so if a 40 trim backplate works with the 60 trim compressor wheel and housing; it would be kinda weird if a 50 trim didn't.

Another nice thing about retaining the 40, 45, or 50 trim backplate is that 90% of them are dynamic seal, so they use a normal piston ring and you don't have to ---- with the carbon seal that the 60 trims come with. I've found that ---- just goes together better with the dynamic style backplate. That help answer your question at all?

hmmm i think i asked the wrong question...

if i were to take a .60 a/r compressor housing and exchange it for the .42 compressor housing i have now, would it just be removing bolts and changing it and would i be able to run it like that? would i have to change the wheel as well?

sooo in essence.....t3 .60/.48 but the the same wheel from the .42 a/r? would that be retarded to do?

blackmagic212 03-11-2009 12:39 PM

ok. did i little research and found out that most(i wanna say all) t3 have the same exducer size on the compressor side and the inducer is the one that varies. so if i swap a .60a/r compressor housing it should fit right on except that its still going to be a 50 trim.

i believe it would make an improvement on the spooling characteristics of the turbo. i am looking to make the turbo last till redline on my b18b. i know with the stock .42 a/r compressor housing, its gonna die around 6k-6500 rpms..

Please correct me if i am wrong. i dont like ------ing incorrect information.

to OP, sorry to thread jack but an answer to your "where to find a 50 trim turbo" is on a 85-88 volvo 740(like the turbo i have) and it has to be from a 740 because the other models use a 45 trim turbo. the only downside to this turbo to me is the t3 flange has to be modded to fit a standard t3 flange.

here are some specs i found on spooledmotorsports.com

Specs:
Garrett model number: TB0363 (T3 series turbo)
Compressor Trim: 50
Compressor housing A/R: .42
Turbine housing A/R: .48
Horsepower Capabilities: ~275hp
Internal Wastegate: Yes
Water cooled: Yes
Wastegate setting: 7 psi

Cool, I just checked out spooled. Are they a good company? Prices seem fair, they wanted $200 for what looked like a decent T3 50 trim.

blackmagic212 03-11-2009 08:33 PM

honestly i have no experience with them so cant really give you any information. just did a search on the turbo i had and thats what came up.

type in spooledmotorsports reviews in google and see if anything comes up. thats what i always do before buying anything from any shop/online store.

is that t3 50 trim turbo there asking for rebuilt? if so i think its a decent price IMO but then you could always junkyard hunt for one in good condition but who knows if anything will turn up

just a little heads up, on my recent post i thought swapping the .60 housing for the .42 would be workable but i didnt take into account the space between the inducer on the compressor wheel and the ID on the compressor housing and was informed by 2G6 that the space would be too big.

Does anyone know how much of a space there is? Can someone measure the differences in length of the 60 and 50 trim compressor wheels?

Thanks 2G6 for heads up. Greatly appreciate it
