What am I getting myself into?

Hi there. I have been lurking on this site for a while now. I have a fullly built ls/vtec and I am going turbo. I already have a t3/t4 60 trim .60/.63. I also have a custom tubular manifold that is stainless steel. Tial wastegate is also what i got and I still am waiting for intercooler and piping. I think I wil be using neptune for tuning but I am not sure. What are other things I should know about when going for high boost. I am aiming for 450 horse

What is "fully built" exactly? You gotta give us something to work with. You are going to get roasted by the OG's with posts like this.

Re: What am I getting myself into?

Fully built would mean

Golden eagle sleeves
srp 8.5 pistons
Eagle rods
arp main bolts
arp head studs
balanced crank
ported b16 head
skunk2 titanium retaines and springs
Gsr cams
Golden eagle ls vtec conversion kit

Re: What am I getting myself into?

well since you have an LSVTEC I would really look in to what compression ratio you're at now with thoes pistons and that head.
Go on the SRP site and also open up the Cspeed compression calculator for B series engines, find out what your total CR is with the headgasket you are using, the lower the better.

For my B16 for example (semi built w/ pistons/rods but no sleeves) I'm at around 9.5:1 with a .045 headgasket and SRP 9.0:1 pistons, kinda high but It will be fine. you want to stay around the mid to high 8:1CR or the mid to low 9:1CR anyting higher and you are at more risk of detonation.

NOTE: the CR that SRP rates your pistons at is based on using a .040" headgasket, it is not with the factory HG, just remember that.

Also remember that the Cspeed calculator is not 100% accurate and gives you an approximate range give or take.

Since you said you have all the stuff to physically turbo your car then I would get a really conservative basemap made and go to a tuner with your setup, no point risking a fully built engine.

450 is alot of power by the way, maybe you can show Hotrex what its like to go past the 400 mark without destroying sleeves, and post some pics of the setup along with some good porn for the rest of us.8)

Re: What am I getting myself into?

I will post pics once I get time to work on it. The problem I have is there isnt a tuner up here in alaska. There is a dyno up here but the owner uses it for personal use. I was going to use the headgasket from the ge ls/vtec kit. Will that one be fine? Anybody know the size of it off hand? thanks for the reply

Re: What am I getting myself into?

well if yout want your CR to be what SRP states, then you should purchase the cometic .040 HG

You wil not make that kinda power with that turbo!!!!

Re: What am I getting myself into?

How so? I will be using race gas to assist it in that level.

Re: What am I getting myself into?

That turbo will only flow so much air, and not the amount to make 450hp!

Maybe not with that turbine A/R, but that wheel CAN make that power. It is sort of at the limit, but nonetheless.

Re: What am I getting myself into?

pretty damn close to 450 if you really push the turbo. 400 whould be a more realistic goal.

for those goals id go with a T31/T04B 60-1 .70/.63 75 trim

Wow. Thanks for all the replies. I appreciate the facts you guys gave instead of saying its not possable. 400 should be good for a ef chassis anyway.

p.s. Honda-tech does suk. You have now made a new homemade turbo fan. You guys got shirts or stickers I can order?

Yes we do, and yeah you are right about HT, alot of them have $3k turbo kits and frown upon the DIY croud, there is still some good info on there though.

Anything over 400 on a civic is a waste of power, I would focus on RPM and get a turbo that will make max power to your desired RPM, this way it wont drop off at full throttle, focus on weight as well, EF's are only a bit lighter than EG's depending on the model, if you have such things as subs/spare/extra seats Pull all of that crap out before you go to the track to have the most effective run.

I have a friend making mid 300 horsepower and it is an 11 second car (92 EG hatch)

Goodluck.

Re: What am I getting myself into?

Thanks. I have a stock interior but looking to order some recaros or something. I will be putting a sub in there but only a 10. I dont want to be all gutted out at the track. I want to run my car the same way it does on the street. So thats why I am investing in 17 inch drag radials for my FN01RC's. I know it will hurt my time a little bit but I dont really care about that .01 second. I am building it for fun. I when I get bored with it I will be moving to my other project which is a 1980 corolla

Did you see that he said that it was a t3/t4 60 TRIM .60/.63. NOT A TO4E 60trim. So im gona assume that its a airesearch t3 from a ford. In that case its limit is about 300hp. But ----, what do I know ;)

Re: What am I getting myself into?

I don't understand why people get so serious about a hp number for a build. If youve got to have a goal shoot for a track time or something meaningfull.

YA, nothing, you're a stupid dumbfuck. "Assumptions are the mother of all fuckups" - Jules Winnfield, ie Samuel L Jackson, Pulp Fiction.

T4, ya that means T3, cause he didn't put an 'E'. :l

drunkinmaster makes 405 at 25psi with that snail on a sohc, i dont see why 50 more hp on an LS/VTEC isnt possible...

Re: What am I getting myself into?

The best thing you can do for your EF if you want a decent time is invest in a good suspension (traction bar setup to get rid of the rubber bushing'd front crossmember) and a good set of slicks. I've seen 10's come out of EF's with good suspension/slicks with the 400-450whp range.

And yes, I do agree...H-T sucks balls, but like Xgenturbo said...H-T does have some good info hidden among all the useless crap :P

its for a T3/T04E .60/.63 60 trim. if youd actually took the time to compared the compressor maps, you whould notice that they are the same. but what do you know?

Re: What am I getting myself into?

Actually it is a new garrett. I have a jimfab traction bar already installed. Suspension wise I have tokico blue with skunk2 coilovers set at a 1 inch drop. I will drop it more once I get a camber kit. I will be posting pics once I get my crank back.
