Default Well, I'm boosted

Finished the install tonight.... it was a royal ------- bitch to do, let me tell you. However, after a long few days and lots of swearing/beer/pizza and a couple beerbong hits... it's working. However.... I am worried about my wastegate not opening. I haven't taken it up too hard, but it was still climbing above 7-8 psi when I let off the throttle cuz I was scared of overboosting. Also, when the car is at idle and getting gas, it makes a light clicking noise that I am not used to hearing. I thought it might be detonation, but the A/F gauge reads its running a nice stoich/rich mixture after it warms up. Cruising at 2.5-3k is reading an almost perfect stoich on my autometer A/F gauge. I think it just might be the turbo or somthing, but it certainly had me worried, but after driving it, it seems to be running absolutely fine in vaccuum and boost. So, does anyone know a safer way of getting the wastegate to open to make sure it's not going to overboost me past 11 psi? And anyone have an idea what that sound might be? It certainlly does not sound like "bbs in a can", but I have not really heard detonation before, but my buddy thinks it isnt that, and the A/F gauge is showing no leanness at all.

Anyhow.... It's late, I need sleep, I'm super happy about getting her running, and I can actually drive to work tommorow. So special thanks to Gram, Wilf, Nick, all the guys at HMT and TurboD16, Beerbongskickass, Sleemans Honey Brown lager and Uberdata

Setup details are

it sounds like you are running a little lean, i think the a/f gauge only reads to like 14.xxx in full rich, so when you're in boost, you actually want your boost gauge to be full rich, i get lean pops when my a/f gauge says stoich and how is it reading stoich at idle? the ecu is in closed loop at idle/part throttle, so the a/f gauge isn't doing anything but bouncing around, it only reads correctly in open loop but congratulations on your set up and being boosted, it sounds like you just need to get her tuned, try another .bin with a little more fuel and see how it runs.

Congrats man,

the ticking sound is probably an exhaust leak of some sort, or the compressor wheel could be hitting the housing? or is it a new turbo?

Detonation wont occur if its just sitting there idling without a load, it usually takes 100% gas and a heavy gear like 3rd or 4th.

yeah, i was thinking the ticking could be a small exhaust leak also, there almost hard to recognize when they're really small, sound kind of like valves knocking.

Yeah that is probly what it is, since it didnt do that at all before the turbo was on. When I get some more free time off work, I will try to find the source of the leak? Any suggestions on how to do that?

it's more than likely between your manifold and turbo. are you using gaskets? if so, what kind, metal or what?

Do they actually click? Because on closer inspection the sound seems to be coming from the head/intake mani.... and if they do click....is that a bad thing?
