Welding a T3 flange onto RBH5 ?

I picked up two T3 flanges and used one for my manifold that I made and the other I'm welding onto the IHI. I didn't feel like making a goofy flange for the IHI(VF which has the fucked up triangular flange) and if I wanted to change turbos later on my manifold would be useless. Now the question is has anyone done this of welding a different flange onto the exhaust housing over the existing one. Also I only have a wire feed MIG welder and would that be sufficent of welding on the flange onto the cast steel housing and have any problems holding? My manifold came out pretty nice and if anyone cost post them for me I'll send them my picture of the manifold to post.

If you have a Wire feed welder with gas just turn up the heat a lot so you get good penetration. Ive seen a few people weld T3 flanges to HF manifolds with a Mig and they didnt have any problems. I would un-bolt the exhaust housing from the turbo to do this.

Re:Welding a T3 flange onto RBH5 ?

It's already unbolted being that I had my stepdad beadblast it and got new bolts and had the studs taken out. The only thing is that's it's really clean and purdy and my welder leaves ---- over everything when I weld and taken me forever knocking off all that splatter. A maintence guy at work who a certified welder said that he could do it but I'd have to pick up some welding rods for cast steel in order for it to hold good and look nice.

If i was you I would have the certified welder weld it for you unless he wants to charge a lot. It sounds like you have a flux core welder it might be able to get the job done but i would check and see how much that guy wants first.

He's our maintance manager at work and said he'd do it for free I just need to pick up the welding rods for him to do it because he didn't have anything like that at work and he said that he can TIG weld something like that being that their two different metals.

For cast iron you need Nickel Rod - best to use an Arc welder for this. Preheat the cast-iron to 400F, weld in stages, and beat the weld with a hammer to take teh tension out of it. When your done welding slowly cool it off. Otherwise it'll crack.

FYI, the t-bird RHB5 uses a T3 flange, if you can get your hands on a t-bird turbine housing, you are all set.

I have one BTW, $30+ shipping.

Here are some pics of stillnoturbo's manifold he made. I think i would take the die grinder and port out the colector a little too clean up some of the welds but other than that its looking good man :D. I dont have time to re-size them but there not that big.

Re:Welding a T3 flange onto RBH5 ?

I'm happy since the whole manifold only cost me $16 total to make. 13 for the flange off of ebay and 3 for the high temp spray paint. Yeah, I gotta clean up the collector since it looks like ---- cause I was trying to fill it in with some weld and smooth it out and fill in some of the hard angles to make a smooth transition from the header to collector to the flange. Then I only painted it cause I grinded down most of the casting marks and didn't want it to turn back to complete rust. Plus it's blingin' yO! Then I had some leftover header wrap so what the hell. Overall for a kit that only cost me 400 so far and I'm finally done with everything and just gotta fab up my charge and down pipe with some tubing I can get free from work. This is my cheapest kit I made yet, and probably the nicest and best as parts wise so far. Hmmm Neil if I had the money I'd pick that up from you but I'm super broke and that would bolt right up to my IHI RHB5 with no problems? Aren't the t-birds made by Garrett and didn't think they would work together or match up?

hey thanks 88DX for posting my pics. ;D Anyone think I'm gonna have any problems with the wrapping the cast manifold or should it not bother it?
