Welding to cast?

I have seen a couple steups that have had a flange welded to the cast exhaust manifold. Is this a good idea? I have talked to a couple people and they think that the welds will not stick. Thanks

Re:Welding to cast?

you have to heat up the cast before welding it, just gotta know what you are doing.. my friend did it to a dsm manifold and it works fine...

So maybe gas weld it. Or just heat it with a torch then weld before it cools i guess. Well thanks ill have to try it out.

done it quite a few times with good luck - I had these welded by a certified welder friend - to make sure I didn't overheat it - the turbo was also braced to the block on both of these to keep the weight off of the weld but they worked great. the first 2 are just the turbo flange welded on. the second one had a new steel flange welded to a cast manifold.
