WELDERS NEED YOUR HELP!!!!
Ok, I want to mig all of my EGT senders on my stainless steel OBX >:( turbo manifold. The problem is the bungs for my my probes are brass. I have Argon gas and am using nonfluxed wire.
Will I be able to weld brass to stainless steel or will the welds burn straight through the brass? |
Re:WELDERS NEED YOUR HELP!!!!
you can't weld two unlike metals together with a mig welder especially stainless. the only way u can weld the two together is by brazing them together. go buy yorself some brass welding rods, some flux and use a cutting torch or welding torch to heat up the base metals so they're cherry red and fill with the brass rod. its not that hard.

Re:WELDERS NEED YOUR HELP!!!!
youu could always get some steel bungs..

Re:WELDERS NEED YOUR HELP!!!!
Brazing wouldn't hold up to the exhaust heat would it?
|
Re:WELDERS NEED YOUR HELP!!!!
i agree with todd....i doubt brass bungs would even hold up to the exhaust heat

Re:WELDERS NEED YOUR HELP!!!!
Yeah, I was questionable too but no where else has anything that will match the threads of the senders. I
will just have to go with one for now in the exhaust. Is there any other way I can mount the rest of the senders on the manifold? If I hose clamp them to the manifold, will that work? |
Re:WELDERS NEED YOUR HELP!!!!
Yes, you can use that method. The autometer egt probe is chamfered and attached to a clamp. You just tighten it till it's sealed well enough.

Re:WELDERS NEED YOUR HELP!!!!
It would be hard to braze them together couse brass has a lower melting piont than stainless. The brass would proabably melt away before the stainless got red.

Re:WELDERS NEED YOUR HELP!!!!
Yeah, one of the probes came with the hose clamp mod; but I was talking about hose claming them on the outside of the runners. I know it won't be as accurate as with gas flowing on the probes but will it still give me a decent reading?

Re:WELDERS NEED YOUR HELP!!!!
im sure someone makes ss bungs look harder and then tig them

Re:WELDERS NEED YOUR HELP!!!!
Thanks for the words of wisdom. I will just hook up the one probe in the downpipe for now and later when I get somemore doe I'll get the rest tig'd to the manifold.
Later. |
Re:WELDERS NEED YOUR HELP!!!!
You can just drill a hole in the manifold and then tap it with the same thread as the sensor... That would be pretty secure and simple.

Re:WELDERS NEED YOUR HELP!!!!
Easier said than done; the thread pattern is lik 1/32's.

Re:WELDERS NEED YOUR HELP!!!!
Don't they use the 1/8" npt? That is kind of standard. Check out omega.com for some thermocouple supplies.
