water cooled turbo
 

Is it possible on a water/oil cooled turbo, to unhook the coolant lines and run the turbo just oil cooled.

There was a thread in this forum about a week or two ago about what to pack in that chamber, dirt, tobacco, antifreeze.

Yes it's possible, water cooling is pretty much to help keep the oil from cluttering up.

Just run a turbo timer if you plan on doing this, or just don't try and race for long periods of time on the interstate.

Cool, I will try that, I am burning coolant through the exhaust. I just replaced the headgasket and it still does it. I sent the head in to see if it is warped, but it was not.

like quadnie said, it's cool, just block of the holes, and don't shut your car off right after a long haul or after anything "sporty" the coolant jacket is mainly there to prevent cakeing of oil inside the turbo. Good luck.

Damn, that sucks that you had to replace a head gasket first.. like me, always the most complicated ---- gets ruled out first, then the simple ----. How much water are you burning thru the exhaust? Something noticable? Maybe it's a water jacked in the block.. possibly the turbo. If it's not getting any worse, and not really that bad - it would be cool to have a "water injected" car.

it is not really bad, but it can be noticed.

are you missing that much water from your resevoir every week or something? Sometimes tracing this ---- can be tricky. Try running it hard, do a high rev shutdown, and feel the intake for water, or take out the plugs for them to tell you what's up.

I fill it every week. I check the plugs just about everyday and they are dry and blackish color.

How much water are you having to put in? Do you see it burning the antifreeze out the tail pipe? Are you running a cat?
