Wastegates n BOV's (What the MM mean, Whats the dif)
Just looking into external wastegates and BOV's. They have like 38mm 42 mm 50mm
And stuff like that just wonderrin what the difference is and which would be better for which setup. I plan to run 14-16psi if that matters. Let me know Thanks |
Re:Wastegates n BOV's (What the MM mean, Whats the dif)
The first question would be..which one are you looking at..wategate or BOV?

Re:Wastegates n BOV's (What the MM mean, Whats the dif)
I think normal turbo setups consist of both.
Are you aware of the functions of those two devices? |
Re:Wastegates n BOV's (What the MM mean, Whats the dif)
I know a BOV lets out the boost when you let off the throttle when boost has already been built up.
Dont really know what a wastegate does though. Is on better than the other? External (always mounted on the manifold right?) or internally inside the turbo Why would you need a 38mm wastegate as opposed to a 44mm |
Re:Wastegates n BOV's (What the MM mean, Whats the dif)
i belive that the wastegate sets the ammount of boost you require
|
Re:Wastegates n BOV's (What the MM mean, Whats the dif)
how so?
It does come out of the turbo mani right? |
Re:Wastegates n BOV's (What the MM mean, Whats the dif)
The bigger wastegate diameter is for high power higher flowing engines.
|
Re:Wastegates n BOV's (What the MM mean, Whats the dif)
wastegates control boost by allowing exhaust to bypass the turbo, thus creating less boost. The bigger the wastegate, the better it is going to be able to control a big turbo on a high powered motor

Re:Wastegates n BOV's (What the MM mean, Whats the dif)
would a 38 mm external wastegate be good for about 300whp and 15psi?
|
Re:Wastegates n BOV's (What the MM mean, Whats the dif)
Go internal wastegate (which will probably come on the turbo you get) and spend the money on an electronic boost controller. ;)
You don't need all that fancy external wastegate stuff until you have $10,000 for the motor. ;) |
Re:Wastegates n BOV's (What the MM mean, Whats the dif)
I agree with stealthy on this one.
Please look into all this more before you start on your kit. Where u running dry shots or wet shots of nitrous when that is all u did? |
Re:Wastegates n BOV's (What the MM mean, Whats the dif)
Was running a 65 shot dry, sohc zc motor, i/h/e, gutted cat, 15" slips on azenis with 18psi
Was beating a friends b18c1 blt on hatch with runs 14.1-14.3 by a car with traction I guess Ill look into an internal wastegate, was gonna get an aftermarket boost controller anyways |
Re:Wastegates n BOV's (What the MM mean, Whats the dif)
do you even understand how a wastegate controls boost? or a boost controller for that matter?
|
Re:Wastegates n BOV's (What the MM mean, Whats the dif)
Yeah the 35mm refers to the inlet size for wastegate, the size of the area that lets air flow. And as for which is better internal or external, how many race cars you see runing internal wastegates? :)

How many race cars do you see on the street?...
