Wastegate Questions

This question has been messing with my head. Say your wastegate spring stock setting is set to 7psi. Your wanting to run for example 4psi or something. With a boost controller would you be able to drop the boost, as well as increase it? Or only increase from the stock wastegate setting of 7psi?

Re:Wastegate Questions

With a bleeder boost controller the only thing you can do with it is increase the boost because it bleeds air off that would go to the wastegate. Therfore, less air going to the wastegate means the wastegate opens less, resulting in higher spooling. The bleeder type cannot lower boost, but lengthening the wastegate actuator rod can, although it sacrifices low rpm spool time. So it's a tradeoff.
I am not too familiar with electronic BC's.
I have a Joe P. MBC which I do not even use.

Ok. So say I did go and strengthen the actuator rod on the wastegate. Would be able to be changed back later. Or is it a permanent setting? Also how would you go about this. Electronic boost guages are wayyyy to much for my budget.

Re:Wastegate Questions

You can thread the wastegate rod, like alot of turbos already have, and adjust it like that.

Re:Wastegate Questions

ok.. could someone explain just exactly how to thread the rod...

I kinda have an idea here, as in to weld some sort of metal sleeve onto the wastegate flapper, and then thread the actuator rod, spin a nut onto the actuator rod, and then slide one end of the rod into the sleeve. Then whenever you turn the nut, it would adjust the wastegate...

Tell me if I'm nuts and there's an easier way.
And if anyone has any pics of an adjustable actuator that would kick ass

Re:Wastegate Questions

Ok, I figured it out...

step 1:

Cut your wastegate actuator rod in half.
depending on the size of the rod, get a corresponding die.
for my example let's say it's 1/4-20.

So go out and get yourself a 1/4-20 thread die, and a piece of hex stock about 3/4" long

Thread each half of the rod to 1/4-20 and then thread the hex stock onto the threads just to be safe, I would put some never-seize onto the threads just in case.

If you really wanna be creative, you could cut maybe 1/4" out of the middle of the rod, and have it adjuatable 2 ways, less boost or more boost.

BTW, if you're not familiar, hex stock is basically like a long nut... you can get it at most hardware stores.

tough to see, but can you see the sleeve that was added?

Re:Wastegate Questions

Yup, and I thought of another addition..

If one end was threaded standard thread, and the other end was reverse - then you could adjust the wastegate simply by turning the hex stock, rather than disconnecting the wastegate...

Re:Wastegate Questions

you can buy adjustable wastegate acuators. threading yours is alot cheaper tho. ::)
