wastegate question

I have an external wastegate for my turbo setup and i have a question about the two holes on the WG. i have to hook a vacuum source to the side one correct? what bout da top? i saw some setups where they left it, not even plugged up.
Wat should i do, plug it up? or connect another vacuum line to it?

Re:wastegate question

hook a straight vacuum source to side nipple leave top nipple open unless you are going to run a boost controller.

Re:wastegate question

i am gonna run a manual boost contrroller, so what do i do? right now my wastgate is setup this way.

is this good, im running a vacuum line off the side of the WG and the top open. leave da top?

also wheres all the good vacuum sources at?

Re:wastegate question

mine setup should be okay then, right? same as the diagram that i posted. this is the way it mine is reallly setup right now, but without a FMU.

anyone?

Re:wastegate question

i'd T it off the hose that goes to the middle of your block next to the BOV/FPR vacuum line, the PCV valves i think it is. so the wastegate has it's own boost/vacuum source and not a shared one as it would if you would've T'd off the BOV. about the boost controler, i had a bad experience for me anyways building one, i ended up buying a turbo xs mbc off ebay and it works awsome.

Re:wastegate question

definately don't T it off the FPR. i wouldn't even T the BOV off the FPR since i see you have the FMU Td' off the FPR already. here's a pic of how i did it off a big vacume source on the manifold, i was gonna do it off the PCV hose which is that larger hose you have going into the top middle of your valve cover on the intake manifold side. that vacuum source is large enough to where you can add a TT one of those Ts' that has 2 outlets so you can T 2 things off 1 source. here's the pic

i didn't T off the PCV valve after all. i T'd off the charcoal fuel/emission filter cause it was gonna be much easier then the PCV. i did it with a plastic T edit:(platic T painted flat black) instead of the bulky brass homedepot T <-what was i thinking ::).

further away so you could see where i Td' off.

hardly no boost spikes at all with an internal w/g. only a 1 psi boost spike on 2nd & 3rd gear. now that the waste gate isn't feeding off the fuel pressure regulator, and the BOV vacuum source, the BOV doesn't flutter on low psi (5-7psi) and the BOV sounds louder too. but the main purpose as why i did this is to avaoid buying a $40. vacuum manifold and to end of reduce the almost 3psi in boost spikes i was getting. i already drove the car for a while and it worked out good.

Re:wastegate question

okay this is my actual engine bay, i didnt get to take a pic of my engine wit the turbo in yet. this is the way my vacuum lines are set. I dont have a FMU.

blue: vacuum lines
pink: Blow off valve
Green: wastegate

sorry bout da bad artwrk.

Re:wastegate question

so i should tap the wastegate vacuum line into the charcoal fuel/emission filter line the one that has the red writing on it. mine is on the throttle body right?

Re:wastegate question

okay i know wat, Im gonna put my BOV and boost gauge to the fuel pressure regulator. and wastegate to... i think to that vacuum source on the back of the manifold where right now i have the boost gauge set.
Does this sound good? Cmon i need help im firing up my car tomorrow.

Re:wastegate question

sorry to post so late, i just came across it again. the charcoal canister is behind the intake manifold, right where the "M" in the word vacuum lines you wrote on the pic is. the one under the throttle body is for coolant. come to think of it. don't T off the pcv valve ok. do it off the charcoal canister. it's the other intake manifold outlet that's next to the blue line you drew, the closet one to the back of the intake manifold by the firewall. i hooked mine upto that and now it's rock steady boost, no drops at all. just 1 1/2 more psi in 4th and 5th gear. i'm lovin it. :P

Re:wastegate question

why would u put a MBC on the bottom nipple.

dont all boost controller hook to the top nipple, because they bleed pressure into the top port putting more pressure on the TOP of the diaphragm making it harder to open..

or am i wrong? ???

no your right, i drew it wrong,

for an mbc, you hook it up to the side (bottom) nipple and let the top vent to atmosphere, you only use the top and side with an ebc.

Re:wastegate question

i got it, never mind, i found that i had a spot on my turbo housing that has a great vacuum source for the wastegate. everything is great! Car is running, spooling a lil late but pulls like a mutha @ around 4k.

if you connect the wastegate to a vacuum/boost source from the intake manifold, the turbo will spool much faster. i experienced this in my own set up.

i got a t3/to4e turbo and right now im at full boost at around 4-5k. low boost is about at 2800 and up. you say that i can spool up faster if i change the wastgate vacuum source? b/c right now the wastgate is running off the turbo housing. i suggest i plug it up and run off that charcoal somethin line? do i just run just the wastegate line to the charcoal line? or do i also add the BOV line to it too? Wat about the Boost gauge? where did you hook it up at?

robs99si 09-10-2004 08:22 AM

Re:wastegate question

boost gauge is T'd off the cruise control vac. source in the back of the intake manifold. BOV T'd off the fuel pressure regulator. and the wastegate is T'd off the charcoal canister hose. see the link i put pics where i hooked up the wastegate. you can T the BOV and the boost gauge off the PCV valve hose too, that'll work also-i didn't do this cause i hadn't thought about it when i did the install, and also i had a vacuum source behind the intake manifold(cruise control vac. source)which was close to where the boost gauge line came outta the firewall.
