Wastegate Actuator Arm
Allright, I just picked up an IHI RHb5 turbo out of an MX6. I know that they are preset to 8psi however I would like to modify my actuator arm to lower that. Would I have to lengthen or shorten my arm?

shorten i think.

Re:Wastegate Actuator Arm
yeah i know how u could do it. use one of those big long nuts. just goto home depot u will see em.
cut arm. thread both ends with a die. screw nut on then thread on the other side. u might need to take it off to do this.. |

Re:Wastegate Actuator Arm
also hey
make sure u thread one the opposite way because with them both threaded normal, the nut wil just move up the shaft got it? |
Re:Wastegate Actuator Arm
Wow...good call, I never thought about that...Thanks again.
Also...this turbo is going on my del Sol S (D15B7 I believe it is...but its so slow I dont bother remembering)...Am I okay to assume that at 133k miles 8psi would be too much boost? I'd love to lower it to like 4psi to start and just a MBC to adjust it from there. -ryan |
Re:Wastegate Actuator Arm
Uhm.. you lengthen it to lower boost..
|
Re:Wastegate Actuator Arm
its not your motor, its your fuel management. if you got good fuel managment u can run 10psi.

Re:Wastegate Actuator Arm
As of right now I plan on just sticking with an FMU...Eventually down the road it'd be nice to pick up an AFC and DSM injectors and run the AFC hack.
So what do you think...lengthen or shorten?! -ryan |
Re:Wastegate Actuator Arm
im not sure.. just thread it up for now ..
dood think about it. your manifold pressure is positive when in boost. so that means the rod is pushed. i dont know which way the actuator rod opens the wastegate throw me a pic. in other words. is it pulled or pushed open? |
Re:Wastegate Actuator Arm
It is in fact pushed.
http://www.riotdesigns.com/turbo/sta...s/DSCF0020.jpg I am also thinking shorten it and it will be EASIER to open...thus less pressure required...I dunno??? -ryan |
Re:Wastegate Actuator Arm
Well, let's think about this for a minute...it's kind of like the manual boost controller setup with a ball and spring. Depending on the springs "strength"...the ball could be pushed at different psi. This arm is in a way the same thing...depending on its strength it can be pushed at different psi. Right now its pretty tough to push the flapper open with the arm. If I shorten it, less pressure will be required at the "can" to push that arm open...so the answer is in fact SHORTEN the arm to lower the boost.
Am I thinking logically or am I just smoking crack? -ryan |

Wow.. I didn't think this thread would get this hrm, "in depth".
You lengthen the rod. This way, it'll already be open, and exhaust will leak through, thus lowering the amount of force needed to completely open the gate.. because it's already propped open by the lengthened actuator arm.. :-\ |
Re:Wastegate Actuator Arm
You lengthen it... definetely.. just take the wg off and pull on the arm.. see wheather air is coming into the wg or out of the wg..that should work right? corect me if im wrong
