Default VW FI

Can anyone point in the direction of some good information/basics to adding forced induction to MkII VW's? I'm doing some browsing on vwvortex.com, which I've seen mentioned here before, but it's really turning out to be a lot like the H-T of VW's, and I can't tell what's proven and what is just bandwagon talk

I've heard the blocks can take 15 psi since they're closed deck iron blocks, but I also know that PSI is not the right way to judge what numbers you're gonna put down, so I guess if any of the VW guys that I know lurk around here could chime in, what power levels are stock engines in VW's good for?

Engine manegement is also a killer, the whole multitude of systems VW's have used over the years is just tricky to get a hang of. Makes me think that just using something like MegasquirtNSpark would be my best bet. If anyone has some good links to fuel and spark manegment they'd be appreciated.

As I said, right now I'm just searching, so some of these answers may be easy to find via searching, but if you guys could give me a direction to look in, it'd help me a lot. I know this is mostly a Honda site, but I wanna know if turbo'ing an older VW is really worth my time, and whether the potential is there.

Thanks,
Brett

digifant injection seems to be the hot trick for boosted mkii's. Get the engine harness from a g60 corrado and get a chip from sns tuning, or local with techtonics. Techtonics will custom burn you a chip from a dyno graph with air/fuel and all that....nothing as easy as the hondas have with engine management choices.

You could always rock a rabbit and go with a cis turbo setup. old school mechanical injection, but easier to mod and you can do it with factory parts from audi's and volvos and who cares if you blow up a rabbit and their lighter and look cool with chrome. That's right, chrome son....ok maybe I just like chrome.

i have a few friends who have turbo mk2's, but they are running haltech.

2.0 xflow can take 18psi and be straight if its tuned well. ive seen g60's on well over 20 psi stock block, and i personally know 2 people who have melted pistons on less than 18 psi on a g60. its all in how you drive and how u tune.

the problem wiht boosted vw's are ususaly the transmissions. they dont take to well to higher tq #'s, so a lsd like quaife or peliquin is recommended.

hey hows it goin? the vortex is gay...just like Honda-tech. im in the middle of my GTI project right now. i came into this from the Honda side, so logically i wanted to modify the VW engine management ----...but its all gay. CIS wont get you much power (but if you REALLY want to try i can direct you to the man). and the digi stuff really isnt chippable (like the way Honda ---- is) and doesnt seem to work too well.

my plans are for at least 250whp (more like 300+) on a Crossflow ABA, so standalone is what needs to happen. most all the systems are expensive as ----...except MegaSquirt, which is what i will be using...

VW blocks seem to be strong as all ---- (dont reuse rod/headbolts though!), there is a guy on the hardcore forums that made like 400whp on a stock ABA block (16v head). so the block can take it. but an 8v head just doesnt flow that well

the 'hardcore' forum...
