That's a cute little trick but my method includes danger and possibly injury, not to mention premature clutch wear.

 

why don't you check your wastegate too

 

Plus this would only work if you building boost. Which most can't do without being in the car and driving down the road. If you try this, you will be just washing you engine by sucking in nice soapy water because you car will be in vacuum and tell you nothing.

Better method is find a Smoker, Or take up the habit yourself, and exhall over you areas you want to check and see where the smoke is drawn to, that your not ingesting water and soap into your motor.

 

Smoking, thats a decent idea. I might try that next time. I've tried spraying starter fluid around, and for some reason that never works for me.

 

Actually a good way to find a leak under vacuum is getting some carb cleaner and spraying down any of the joints, if there is any surge/difference in idle you found your spot .

 

kinda sounds funny but take a long piece of hose 3-4 feet or so, hose should be at least 1/2" and up. stick one end to your ear and hold the other end and move it around where your leak might be. \the hose will act as like a stethascope and the scaping air will be loud... also works very well with small exhaust leaks.

 

try removing the charge it the turbo, drop in a smoke bomb & cover & let smoke seep though the leaking area
