Turbocharging a Carburated engine?

I know this is possible, and I searched all over google, and could find NOTHING worthwhile.

So this gets posted on HMT...

My brother has a Big Block 454ci Chevy engine, bored and stroked to a 496ci. Not sure how built but, its been balanced to spin up to 10k.. so I would imagine its BAD.

So basically he picked up a kit with the manifolds, two Garrett T04 .60a/r turbochargers, and some misc piping, and these crazy cup things that cover the carb.

Does anyone know anything about boosting a carb'd V8? or at least point me in the right direction?

Thanks again.

I will get some pics of it for you guys to see also.

yes you need a draw through setup

you need carbon sealed gaskets (if i remember right) in the turbos so they can handle fuel being sucked through without damage, there hard to tune but worth it IMO

my 510 hauled ass and it was a little 1.6 on 12psi with a dinky weber carb

That cup thing is called the carb hat. After the turbo, the charge pipe goes right into the hat and then through the carb. The only thing you will need after the carb hat is what is called a blow through carb. This is a carburator that is modified to handle boost coming from a turbo or a centrifugal supercharger.

Old news, I put a huge ass garrett T04E on a Pontiac 455. That thing hauled ass, especially with a 4.XX rearend under it.

Anyway, this article would be most helpful I'd say

I'm not sure what they are talking about fuel being sucked thru the turbo....
Just get bigger jets on the primaries, shorter metering rods for the secondaries
Make sure you have a solid float so boost won't crush it
other than that, its pretty simple for a 4 barrel. Good luck hope this helps

Go with blowthrough and check out turbomustangs.com I think it is.

BLowthough is the only way. Easy to do, makes power. Done a million times, I have done it. It was fun!!

good luck with a 496 at 10,000rpm, it might be balanced to that but it wont turn that. I would drill the intake for injectors and run a mega squirt ecu. I'm not a fan of carb'd turbo setups but they can be done. Cadracer on here has a small block carb'd turbo setup.
