turbo/wastegate setup
 

this turbo i have is in perfect condition,no shaft play at all.plus it is allready attached to a std manifold by an adapter plate with the downpipe that fits perfect.the turbo was suposed to be set at 9 psi.the wastegate flapper has been permanently shut and has a wastegate with no arm at all.does this sound right(like it will work)? .lol...is this an external wastegate?.just want to know if this setup works as is..and finally some pics.

you could get some solid metal bar like an exhaust hanger and cut it, weld one side to the wastegate, and then drill a hole in the other side to hook to the wastegate actuator. you would have to get creative though to make it adjustable. probably be best off to open the wastegate some using the homemade arm and then use a manual boost controller to regulate the boost to the gate.

ur internally wastegated turbo has been tranformed to an externally wastegated one.
u need and external waste gate now(tial, deltagate, wtv)

i got it along with with other turbo stuff that was setup on a d16.i got the impression it worked as is.the wastegate on my 14b is internal and dont look like this one.as far as i know,this wastegate has never had an actuator arm.whats the opening in the side of this wastegate?

that looks like a diesel turbo off an older jetta. It is internally gated, but the exhaust has a optional provision to route the wastegate fumes into a separate pipe. The blockoff plate is actually downstream of the wastegate flapper. It comes blocked from the factory.

I wouldn't waste your time with that turbo, it has something like a .35 exhaust side and about a 40 or 45 compressor, that thing only flows about 160 cfm, which in a perfect world will make about 160 HP at the crank. Also, the wastegates came preset at 12 psi. Parts are a bitch to find also.

The deisel engine is meant to run at low rpm, so this turbo is ideal for a deisel only, or a real small gas engine (bike maybe), it'll choke up a gas honda engine in a hurry.

How do I know, I have one sitting on the shelf in my garage that I pulled, before I knew what I was getting into.

It has a pretty unique flange on it, you might need to get a new adapter and a new turbo.

I don't think this is the turbo you're talking about, but at the same time I don't think that's right anyways. Diesels are high compression motors and use very large sized turbines. Yes, they have a short rev, but they produce much more exhaust energy than your typical gas motor. Also, that flange looks like a T3 to me so I don't see any problems bolting it up.

read the post again neil.it's allready bolted to a std manifold on my d16 with the downpipe that fits perfect.just not sure about the wastegate.

listen to him...its an internally gated turbo and thats not the wg flapper your looking at

Are you saying he is right about it being a diesel turbo? Those A/R's don't seem right for a diesel turbo, nor would it be good for a 'small' gas motor.
