Turbo sucked in air filter!!!

Well i decied i post this on this forum now too since you guys are the turbo experts here.

Here is the setup so you know what im working with.
86 honda accord
JDM b20a (no not the preludes b20a5 totally different motor)
H22 MODIFIED SSautoshit manifold and shitty 38mm wastegate
td04 turbo from a wrx
shitty fuel managment for now, just waiting for the rest of my parts to come in for it now.

Alright so im new to boost. I first turboed this car and blew it up because the vaccum line from the wastegate came off and caused it to over boost. So i rebuilt it and i only have 160miles on the new parts and im now starting to have problems.

Here is the situation.

i was just driving along and sped up alittle (got slightly into boost) and then suddlenly the car just lost all power at 5000rpms?? I was like wtf? It seemed to run fine after that but not very strong or anything? So i drove it home hoping i didnt blow it up again or anything. I immediatly bust out the compression tester and go to check the compression to make sure everything inside the engine was fine. I get the damn tester stuck in the spark plug hole damnit!!! It took a good hour to get out. Then i test the rest of them and everything was normal. So i start to look for something else wrong. Then i notice half of the filter on the turbo was gone!!! It was just some uni filter from a dirt bike made out of foam but it was the only thing i could find that had a 2 inch opening that fit on the turbo. I pull off my charge pipes and find out that all of the foam was ground up and stuck in the one side of the intercooler, and i mean tons of foam stuck in there! It had to be blocking off 90 percent of the air flow. I took it off the car to try to clean it. I used a air nozzle at 160 psi and a pressure washer along with a 5hp shop vac with one end plugged. I think i got the intercooler clean now so i put it back on. I also cleaned out all of my charge pipes also. But the car is still running the same it did before!!! Is there anything else that could of gone wrong in this situation??? I cant figure it out!!! It was running so strong before! I dont think there is anything wrong with the turbo, it spins just as freely as it did before and seems to be perfectly fine?? The compression is normal in all cylinders btw.

Does anyone have any idea what it could be???

THANKS!!! and sorry for the long post!

I read the title, opened it up and didn't read one word of your post.

I look for pictures first, then read what happened after that. Now you've left me no choice but to complain. :-\

Re: Turbo sucked in air filter!!!

yeah couldve made it past the intercooler and jammed up somewhere inside your motor, like inside intake. maybe even past that.

when you ------ rig stuff like that and run like 3 parts of a turbo kit all clutter fucked you have problems.

Damn I have the same turbo on my car and i'm suprised its big enough to suck anything, but air in :P. I've never had any problems with my k&n filter....

Re: Turbo sucked in air filter!!!

foam filters shouldn't be used for the compressor inlet.
clean what you can. spark plugs, injectors, intake manifold, charge piping.
does it boost the same amount?

What did i ------ rig!!! Come on! Your saying because i went out and bought a 20$ dollar filter that i thought would work fine makes it ------ rigged???

o and btw: for the people that want pics! I can get some but, what the hell are pics gonna do??? What you want a pic of the airfilter half gone?? just asking??

Re: Turbo sucked in air filter!!!

Damn, I have that same filter on my turbo ???

I've been running it like that for about 6 months now with no problems at all...

How much boost are you running?

b20accord 06-08-2005 05:11 PM

Re: Turbo sucked in air filter!!!

When it sucked it in it was probbaly at maybe 5-7psi max. If i were you finding out how much of a pain this is i would change yours too.

Re: Turbo sucked in air filter!!!

That's what you get for running a filter ;)

Seriously, If I ran a filter, I would never run foam, only paper.

Re: Turbo sucked in air filter!!!

That thing was probably giving tons of resistance.
You were definitely losing power too.

Re: Turbo sucked in air filter!!!

well fixed it. not sure what the hell it was but it boosts now. I ripped everything apart cleaned the intercooler again, tested everything i could think of that would cause it to not boost and put it back toghether and it works so im happy.

accordepicenter 06-09-2005 01:42 AM

Re: Turbo sucked in air filter!!!

bet you had a boost leak when you put it back together the first time adam

Koby 06-09-2005 03:01 AM

Re: Turbo sucked in air filter!!!

I was going to say if you hadn't fixed it yet. Fill the IC up with gasoline, it will probably eat the foam out of any of the internal fins and such. Then you could use a compressor again to clean it out. Get a god damn reducer coupling and use a proper K/N filter or clamp some screen mesh. Little foam filters like that are garbage.

MikeJ-2009 06-09-2005 03:05 AM

Re: Turbo sucked in air filter!!!

Isn't it like an oxymoron to call something ------ rigged on HOMEMADEturbo? ???

Regardless, there isn't much of the filter gone, so I don't think it would cause all that much problem. No filter and open downpipe is where it's at. ;)

N1ghtM0nkey 06-09-2005 04:36 AM

Re: Turbo sucked in air filter!!!

First thing I would have done would be to replace the intercooler with just a straight piece of piping and drive it a short distance to see if it fixed the problem. Obviously if it has the power back it did before, or more than it did, then your intercooler is the problem. I wouldn't drive it too long though, maybe one or two pulls before everything gets nice and heat soaked.

This is called the process of elimination. :P
