turbo s30 build thread

I gave up toying with Hondas a little while back when I realized that I don't really care for the handling characteristics under throttle, and recently picked up this 240z to toy with. I picked up a turbo motor, but the l28et was one of the first turbocharged engines in the US, and as such it was very simple. A 7.5:1 compression ratio meant that detonation wasn't really an issue, but the small t3 turbine was only set up for 5psi, and there was no intercooler or blow-off valve. Just a j-pipe going from turbo to throttle body. I don't like that setup, so I'm adding a few parts and upping the boost (at 7.5:1, why wouldn't I?) Here's what I have so far...

1972 Datsun 240z, delivered to my door, $500:

THATS NICE

Thanks man, but I won't consider it nice until I drive it for the first time. I know I'm looking forward to it.

Last night, I decided it was a good idea to rebuild the wastegate and blow-off valve I received off eBay after hearing some horror stories about their construction quality. Other than a somewhat flakey-looking BOV gasket (which is an easy replacement in the future), they both looked solid and went back together nicely:

Looks like a blast. Cheap, quick & RWD = WIN.

Cool to see all the offbeat projects guys have going on, too. There are so many turbo EF/EGs. It gets old.

I've found that when you visit the internet, people generally generalize and use hyperbole's more often than is necessary. Saying eBay products suck is like saying Italian cars are exotic. Sure, there may be a trend, but you can easily find an exception. eBay is a marketplace, not a manufacturer. The anonymous nature makes me want to check parts before I buy them, but I'd do the same thing with a new Turbonetics or Garrett product as well. Motor goes in first thing in the morning!

I need to buy another fuse panel to put in, but there's a good chance that I'll have it running (sans turbo) tomorrow. It'll give me time to get a wastegate flange welded up (I lack a welder here).

This wastegate is pretty massive though, and I don't need anything that 'serious' so I might just sell this off and get something a bit smaller and more conservative (and a better fit in my engine bay). If anybody's interested in picking up this wastegate, I'll sell it for what I bought it for.

awesome build. i LOVE older Z's
i would look into a stronger rear end. i hear they wont hold up to too much power.
