Default turbo noob looking for answers

ok before i get started it would be great if you didnt pelt me with bricks for being a noob and posting noob things, thanks.

i have a 93 si, D16z6 that i am thinking of turbo charging, i looked at kits and they are just toooooooo expensive *unless im looking only at the expensive ones* but then i got to thinking, my mom parked her saab 900 turbo a couple years ago cause of a blown tranny *this was like a month after she got a brand new turbo installed* it has a Garret t3, now is this something that will work? i read some T3/T4 in here things but never with a garret in front of it.

If it is possiable to do can you point me in the general direction of a thread or website that deals with this turbo in a honda?

Also is there a way for me to check if this turbo is still good? like i said it was only a month old when she parked it but that was 3 years ago.

thanks alot-

Ok first off take the turbo off moms car and put your fingers on the inside of the turbo and wiggle around the shaft. It should have very little play. If it moves around alot the turbo is junk. It also should spin pretty freely.

If this turbo is fine, (which it probably is) It will work fine for your turbo setup, perfect for a d16z6.

Now you need to start collecting parts for your turbo setup.

1. You need to get a manifold, Do you have AC? this is the part which ***** alot of people over, its hard to find nice manifolds that support AC. Basically your looking for a manifold for a T3 turbo (Saabs use t3 turbos) (d-series) All 88-00 Dseries are the same, so if the turbo manifold came off a crx, yes it will work on your car. All D-series exhaust flanges are the same. Where do you get one? Look around the forum, classifieds, hell build one yourself! Off the main page of HMT there is a projects page, lots of people like to use the Crx HF/CX/STD manifold why? because they are almost like turbo manifolds! all you have to do is buy an adapter to make it fit to your turbo and walah.

2. Piping, Since this is a "custom kit" your going to have to make a custom downpipe, and custom intercooler piping. This is one of the most difficult parts about the kit, especially if you dont have a chop saw. Can you weld? or know somebody that can weld for you? Some exhaust shops can do your downpipe, and some cant.. just depends. Where do you get your bends? Jcwhitney.com or speedpartsrus.com 2 1/2 in charge piping is perfect, and a 2.5 Downpipe is also good.

3. Oil lines and ----, Dont ---- around spend the 75 bucks from www.--------------------------- it has everything. The Feed line/Return etc. Nice stainless steel line, with a real nice block fitting. This will require you to take off the oil pan and put the fitting in.

4. Intercooler & BOV.. these are optional items that are not needed but are nice to have. Most of the users on here use intercoolers from Johnnyracecar.com why? because they are cheap and fit our hondas quite nice. What blow off valve? anyone you want.. RFL, a stock dsm one, whatever they all make noise.

5. Management This is the most important part of the kit, this is so you dont blow the ------- engine apart in 15 mins. You need to locate some Mitsubishi injectors 450cc, they come from any of the DSM (eclipse/talon/lason) turbo 5speeds. Now you need something to control them, Since you already have a p28 in your car (thats your ecu) the best way would be get the ecu socketed and use a chip with the bbka.bin file (uberdata), it would be perfect. Basically uberdata and chipping your ecu is more or less like a full stand alone ecu. But since your a newb its alot of information to grasp right off the bat. If you dont want to chip your ecu you can get one of those dodad Apexi V or S AFC fuel controllers, those work ok.

Basically the first month all your going to do is just start collecting parts and reading. This website has so much information its unbeleivable. There are lots of pictures and write ups off the main page you can look at. (under turbo projects)

This post was kinda vauge but its pretty close, I could write 2 pages of ---- to do.

Thats why we have a NEW USER FAQ
https://www.homemadeturbo.com/forum/...;threadid=3921

just go slowly and read through that ----, and go back 5-10 pages in this forum and there are lots of threads of info.

hey thanks alot jeff, but before i run off to the faq,

if the turbo turns out good, and all i need is the intercooler, piping, oil stuff, manifold and so on how much is it gonna run do you think? *i plan on researching these things but if you could give me a rough estimate that would be cool*

oh also i was deffinatly confused about the management thing, can i find a detailed thing on that in the faq or do you know of a place that has some noob info on it?

-thanks again.

Read in the Engine Management forum about the whole Uberdata/chipping ecu deal. There are some guys on the board all you do is ship them your ecu and they do all the ---- for you. It's well worth it.

You can get pretty wild with turbo kits, buy all brand new ---- top of the line ball bearing turbo, apexi core delta fin mother ------- intercooler, 50mm tial vband wastegate, full race manifold, AEM EMS and ---- you can be over 5000 bucks in no time. It really can range from 500-5000, seriously it all depends on what YOU want

haha well i think i wanna keep it under 5k if i can :P

but seriously, im heading to college this quarter so i obviously want to keep things cheap *though not so cheap that i have to replace an engine* im not looking for the uber civic racer award, i just want more power from my d16 and the little *pssshhhhh* noise of course

ok im still working on getting the damn turbo out, *I will destroy that ------- sweedish peice of ----*

so if all goes well and i get the t3 out and its still good im gonna start taking a serious look at parts but what i want to know is if i want to do it right and have no problems with it when im done what kind of price am i looking at for the rest of the parts? *under college bound student budget*
