Turbo leaking and smoking
 
I am boosted as of a week ago and I have encountered some small problems. Well first off, my remanufactured turbo is leaking oil from around the exhaust housing where it meets the center section. My Oil feed fitting is leaking oil, but I don't think the oil on the exhaust housing is from this. Also, my Oil Return Line may be the culprit. The line is not all downhill. The line has to go slightly uphill where it needs to meet the fitting. The fitting is pointing slight downhill. But, It seems like it is leaking from one of the bolts, but the bolt is tight. I think because of the oil that is leaking onto the exhaust housing, it is causing it to smoke. When I get under the car, it looks like the smoke is coming from that spot. It smoke bad when I have it sit outside in about 60-70 degree weather for about 5-8 hours. It also smokes when the engine is cold and the smoke isn't present/visible when I am driving it. The smoke is white. I am using an adjustable restrictor and I have it restricted by roughly half maybe more. So I know my turbo isn't getting more than 25-30 PSI at WOT.

Any ideas would be appreciated...I was thinking about using gasket sealer on the threads of the bolt to stop the leaking if it is really coming from that bolt.

Fix your return line for sure ASAP. Oil leaks can be kinda tricky i would re-seal your feed line, then clean all the oil off the center section with some brake clean then re-check for oil leaks.

EVerything indicates that the turbo gets completely filled in with oil and the oil has no choice to overflow by the easiest exit: the tubine end piston ring. This is common.
A good restricor size is 1/16" and your oil return must be straight down with ½" diameter. in the pan, you should have tapped the fitting above the oil level.
Also, double check the usual causes for oil leakage like a clogged air filter or some anormally high crankcase/oil pan pressure (test your engine compression against manufaturers specs)

First thing to do would be to fix the return line... then go from there...

It sounds like you are on the right track with the oil pressure restrictor, but your return is very important, it has to be downhill the whole way and the bung has to be above the oil level in your oil pan.

I am picking up another oil pan in a week or so and I am gonna put the bung on the shallow side and cut the return line so it has no kinks and goes straight downhill....What do you all think?

Goooood. The oil return is the most important thing.

If with a 1/16" restrictor on the inlet and a good straight 1/2" return line above oil level are not sufficient to stop the leak, then either the engine is compressing in the pan or the "turbine end piston ring" is worn out.

Well the turbo was remanufactured and was never used until i bolted it up. As far as the restrictor... I have it restricted by roughly half. I just put on my exhaust today and the sound of the intake(not sure where it is coming from, but this is where it sounds like it is coming from) when the turbo spools sounds rough. So i figured i was not giving it enough oil. I opened the restrictor very slightly and the sound seemed to have gone away. Later today I started it up and drove it and the sound was back to a rough sound when the turbo was spooling.

If it has a rough sound...Still using it will make things worst.
You apparently are due for a turbo check up.
Our turnaround time for a preventive rebuild is 48 hrs. AFter that, it's warrantied for 6 months.

Sounds and runs fine.

Its weird because it seems that the turbo leaks sometimes. I can tell by the oil on the charge pipes. It stopped leakin when I fixed the reutrn line and restricted the oil some. Every now and then it will still leak.....

Also i noticed the turbo leaked when i was running no exhaust. When i put the exhaust back on it stopped.
