Oil is not harmful, but could indicate a leak from a blown seal.

If the blades are touching anything it is junk. Sorry. :-\

i was wondering whats a good way to "clean the turbo.
when taking it apart does it really matter if mark the turbo so when you but it back together its aligned??

well jeff has not marked a few and they still kick.

it is very important but u can get by without it, basically u could get shaft wobble, which cause bearing wear, which leads to turbine hitting the housing, which leads to the darkside.

anyways.

to clean it i use my glass bead booth. another good way is to use some gasoline and a tooth brush..

Agreed, my T3/T4 on my car right now, I didnt re-align the compressor blade with the shaft, because my mark got washed away in the solvant tank, lol.. But shortyz is right, you want to re-align them the way you take them off for proper balance. Or, you could just take the compressor housing off, get some brake clean with a toothbrush, and you will be fine.

I've also had a few turbos that touched ever so slighly on the compressor housing, and didnt have problems with them at all. Once oil is filled in the center section, it takes a little bit of play between the bearings.

:oThat's crazy. I could see the oil taking up some of the play, but I don't know. That's like living on the edge. :-\

Check this site out. http://www.roadraceengineering.com/i...bowarranty.htm
Some shaft play is normal, some oil leakage is normal, alot of either is not so good. Turbo balance is critical, that's why turbo rebuilders spend $50,000.00 and up on computer controled ballancers, so there rebuilds will out last the warranty. Don't disassemble the rotating assembly unless you have to, clean it as a unit with brake clean and a tooth brush.
