turbo for 454?

just quick question, im probally going to turbo my BBC for my chevelle, just wanted to know what would be the best turbo to run?
im going with a single turbo because i want to push as much air as possible, was thinking of getting a egay T70 and having it redone by blaast.
but will this be big enough to handle like 900hp? i dont know if i will make that much, but thats what im shooting for.

so far i just have the bottom together with
forged stock stroke 454 crank
new rods and flat top forged pistons
i want a nice set of dart heads and im going to do megasquirt fuel injection if i can ever get that far.

GT 4294R or dual sc 61 setup ( be cheaper than the GT bandwagon ----)

Re: turbo for 454?

The S400 looks like a pretty good bet for the price. Turbonetics used to have a chart of common turbo sizes and about what PSI/HP they were good for on different sized engines.

Re: turbo for 454?

T70 is way too small. T70 is good for like 500-550hp?

Re: turbo for 454?

yeah thats what i thought way to small, but im not getting into a baller ass GT turbo, and i dont know if a diesel turbo will get me where i want.

Dive_Miguel 10-06-2007 11:48 PM

Re: turbo for 454?

I think the baller turbos are way overrated. I would got with two moderately sized common turbos...Easier, cheaper, and less complicated IMO. Show us a pic of your engine bay for more input.... :y

Re: turbo for 454?

Blaast has said in the past that the egay T70's are so far outta spec that he can't even do anything with them, so I'd scrap that idea...I'd definitely look for a turbo from a diesel oriented type system...That CAT turbo from one of the previous threads looks hella nasty...Maybe 2 .70 trim T3/T4e's?? I imagine that would be rather expensive though...

Re: turbo for 454?

Even Egay has some decent used diesel turbos now and again. There are a few diesel surplus companies that have an "ebay store".

You gonna stay carb or run fuel injection????????

^^^^ how are you liking that on your car?? I can't recall hearin' anything about it lately.

Re: turbo for 454?

the 1/2" head bolt mod killed it
didnt clean out all the aluminum and destroyed the engine rfom lack of oil.

turbo lives no problem.

It was actualy great, 3rd gear 3500rpm 12psi, 4,000 was past 20
it built boost realy fast once it started to boost. I realy liked the turbo and thinks its wurth the work I had to do to use it

Might be a bit small... Maybe look into something T6 flanged? Or a pair of big T4's? With good heads, a built BBC will flow a ---- load of air.

I was thinking the same thing. Seems like you could probly find 2 biggun's easier and probably cheaper. i think that might be easier to mount up as well.

yeah i dont know if the gt45 i saw would be too small, it was as big as my head and had a 5 inch exhaust outlet, guy had it for his 1400 hp supra. cat turbo is the route im going but man that turbo was baller, literally and figuratively.

Single option is going to be a beeotch..

Here's a 460 Ford boat that I had.. Twins are the way to go.

Going to fuel injector or carb?

Re: turbo for 454?

I have a 67bird I will turbo/fuel inject once I get a 'real' job, and I've determined that for a 5.7L sb chevy any of the big holsets (h2a, hx40, etc) would be great for them. IIRC I saw a 3.2L bmw guy say his H2A spooled around 3700.

I'd almost suggest two 57trims, if you can spool at 5k on a 1.8L motor, worst case you'd be fully spooled on a 454 by 2200rpm. And since you can hit 400whp EACH on a Honda with pump gas, more with C16, you're looking at an easy 750whp. Two 60trims or sc61's would be closer to 1000.

Just look at some supra forum. The max WHP may be lower with a given turbo (esp if you carb it), but the spool time will be cut in half (3.2L I6 vs 7.4L V8...)

Re: turbo for 454?

Gt47e's can ussually be picked up for a good price. I have a friend that has 2 of them new in the box. They have twin scroll inlet with a t5 flange and I think the turbine housings are around 1.19
They somehow slipped out of the CAT plant. I'll see if he is interested in selling one, if so I will shoot you his number. I doubt he will ever use them, he is running a blown alky setup in a in a all steel 1946 chevy pickup. Last trip to the track it clipped of 152mph!!so I doubt he is changing anything :)

Re: turbo for 454?

2 holset hx40/50 or 55. 4 or 500$ for both will last forever and make all that power with a faster spool then a nigg er

Re: turbo for 454?

Like spiker said, i've got a T6 flanged garrett TMF55 that you could use if you don't want to pay 1500-2000 for something.
