TO4 turbine housing swap possible? *Pics Inside*
 

I have this turbo, my dad gave it to me. The compressor would be fine but the damn turbine housing is HUGEMONGO. Can you say an A/R of ~1.3.
Is there a way to swap turbine housings. I have no idea what vehicle this turbo came off of, but I'm going to assume it came off a big diesel.

The wheels are perfect and the shaft has minimal play, not out of spec by any means. This turbo is alot like what lazzer had and used for his compressor swap. Does anyone have any idea what kind of housing I might be able to swap onto this badboy? I could just sell it to recoupe some cost of a different turbo. Or I could find a smaller T3 and swap the larger compressor like lazzer. Open to all opinions and options outside of bolting it onto the miata to see when it would spool. I'm guessing 5k rpm. It would be great to find out that I could just swap on a smaller A/R turbine housing.

holy ---- that is big. I think you can block off one of the exhaust scrolls and it would spool faster. I've heard of that being done on large turbos/small engines before.

You are gonna need the turbine wheel as well. Remember that the turbine wheel is the shaft as well.


You might try to find a T3 and swap the turbine and turbine housing.

Yes that'S a t04B, I wonder what compressor trim but it's either a 48, 54 or 63 trim, all of which are excellent compressors, the 48 is good for amost 350hp and the 63 will support over 400hp.

Turbine wise, yes, that'S way too big for most any performance application on a gas engine!
depending on your application, and it'S your cheaper option, you could simply purchase a 100% bolt-on P trim turbine housing with LOW A/r such as .48 or .58 or .69 but they're rare.

Otherwise, and for a faster spoolup anyways, you should have a stage 1 or stage 3 turbine side profesionally hybrided on this nice compressor side.

I have a T3 with a .48 turbine available to me to hybrid this nice TO4 compressor side on myself. There is a local turbo rebuilder that can do professional balancing for me for $30-35 same day so that wouldn't be a problem.
Do you think this would be a good combo for a 1.8 Miata with a built motor? Most concerned with pulling to redline, I'd hate to run out of steam at 6k rpm while i'm pulling to 7k.

Yes, with a .48 turbine, this t04b will work great on your 1.8!!
you should have this kind of hybrid watercooled though...

maybe should you let your shop perfom the whole build and get them to warranty the turbo too.

That's the catch, this T3 i have available to me is only oil cooled.
I run all synthetic oil and plan to install a nice oil cooler soon. I can't seem to find a low cost water cooled CHRA for the same price i'm getting this T3.
$100 shipped for this Saab T3 with good seals and minimal shaft play with WG adapter for the internal gate.

I think its funny that the a/r is actually 1.320. will said miata be a dragstrip car?

No that's why i want more like a .48 turbine instead. 1.32 would hardly spool on a miata. The power output would be pathetic. If I was going to draw i would stroke the miata to 2.0L and then run a T70 like one guy who is currently making 616hp. I've no interest in drag racing, this is going to be a track/autocross car. That's why I would rather have a water cooled chra.

for autocross purposes, that t04b compressor with a t3 48 turbine will be awesome on the 1.8. fast spool up and as much as 250 WHP.

If you want more ponies in the future, you will be able to simply switch to a .63 turbine housing and get 100 more hp easily.

Make sure that core you purchase has no in and out shaft play and that the turbine housing is not too badly cracked. in case of doubt, you know, transforming your old t4 into a watercooled and warrantied .48 or .63 t3/t4 is something i can easily do for you in less than 48 hrs and for cheap.

What about running dual wastegates at a good shalow angle? Would that be a good substitute for a .63 a/r turbine while retaining the spool of the .48?

Blaast, would you mind PMing me a quote for swapping the CHRA out for a water cooled housing and whatnot. Just curious what it would cost me in the future if i chose to do so.

Twin scrolling is in theory very nice but the more i test it, the more i realise Joseph D. was damn right as usual, there'S no free lunch! even with all the twin wastegates in the world, the 1.32 a/r turbine will always remain laggy.
don't forget, on it's factory application, such t04b turbo is mounted without a wastegate. it's a free flowing turbine. it's designed for being laggy. all the exhaust flows through it and you basically get the boost you deserve as it varies according to load.
