timing??

How can I check my timing on the d16a6? do I have to use a jumper like the new cars or do I just set? also can i just use the btm to adjust it or do i have to make sure its dead on then work from there? from what i understand the btm retards from 1-3 degrees per pound of boost correct?

You'll need a timing light, and if I remember correctly you do still need to jump the 2 wires under your dash near the ecu.

Use a timing light. Not sure about the jumper (it isn't two wires, it is a connector with two wire terminals that you can jump with a paperclip) but if you see it hanging high up in there in the kick panel with the ecu, use it. Check a haynes manual to be sure, they don't cost much and will save you a lot of time. You need to set your timing and the unit will go from there, but just setting it at the stock position may or may not work for you. You may have to retard it, or may even be able to advance it. Listen for detonation, and play with the settings man!

how many degrees should the stock timing be set at on the d16a6?

look on your crank pulley. you should see four marks that look like this:

1 1 1 1

the one you want is the middle of the three. the one all the way to the right is tdc. towards the left of the three marks is advance, and towards the right of the three is retard. hope that helps. as far as actual degrees i think the middle is 16 degrees, but just put it in the middle as that is the stock setting. also, you might have to retard your base timing a little depending on your setup. if so, just put it to the third timing mark, which is two degrees retarded, and play with it from there. peace.

i think jumping the connector is after you rotate the dizzy so that the timing change is set. otherwise the ecu will keep the timing the same no matter where you move the dizzy...or so i've heard.

i didn't mess with my timing and just retard .33 degree per pound of boost using a btm.

Re:timing??

The manual states to jumper it before setting the timing. That is what I went by. If anyone has definitive info showing this to be incorrect, post up, otherwise it seems right to me. Jumpering the service connection doesn't affect any long term changes to the ECU, it just allows you to service it.

ok ok.. for myself and other.. clarification.

#0 mark is cyl#1 TDC ?
#2 mark is stock 16 deg advanced?
#3 mark is 2 deg retarded?
#1 mark is what?

Re:timing??

oh...my bad. now that i look at my post it was kind of vague. i was pretty fucked up when i wrote that, so i left out some explanation. yes, 0 would be TDC. mark #2 would be 16 deg(stock setting), mark #3 would be 14 deg (or 2 deg retard), and mark #1 would be 18 deg (or 2 deg advanced).

make sense?
